This study is conducted to explore practical and policy approaches to improving older adults’ quality of life by examining the effects of social capital?comprising trust, norms, participation, and networks—on older adults’ quality of life, and by investigating whether motivation for participation in lifelong education and outcomes of lifelong education participation mediate the relationships among these variables.
This study collected and analyzed data from 289 older adults participating in lifelong education programs for older people operated in Uijeongbu City, Gyeonggi Province, using a self-administered questionnaire survey.
The results of the analysis are as follows. First, trust, norms, and networks were factors that enhanced older adults’ quality of life, whereas participation had no significant effect on quality of life. Second, motivation for participation in lifelong education—specifically goal orientation and learning orientation—as well as outcomes of lifelong education participation, were found to be factors that improved older adults’ quality of life. Third, participation among the sub components of social capital had no effect on older adults’ quality of life, whereas trust, norms, and networks among the sub components of social capital had direct effects on their quality of life.
The findings of this study suggest that motivation for participation in lifelong education and outcomes of lifelong education participation function as important mediating variables in understanding the effects of social capital—particularly trust, norms, and networks—on older adults’ quality of life. These results highlight the need for lifelong education programs for older adults to adopt approaches that strengthen learning motivation by helping learners clearly recognize the purpose of learning, enjoy the learning process itself, and pursue self-development, while also enhancing program content so that participants can experience tangible outcomes through their learning engagement. Accordingly, the results of this study may contribute to the development of practical and policy measures for improving older adults’ quality of life, as well as to providing directions for future academic research in this field.
Several suggestions for future research can be made based on the limitations of this study. First, there is a need to enhance the generalizability of the findings by analyzing data from diverse regions. Second, to more precisely examine the factors influencing older adults’ quality of life, future studies should employ mixed-methods approaches that combine quantitative analysis with qualitative inquiry. Third, the application of structural equation modeling is recommended to more accurately estimate causal pathways among latent variables. Fourth, rather than relying on Harman’s single-factor test, future research should implement preventive strategies at the research design stage—such as multi-source data collection or time-lagged survey designs—to fundamentally reduce common method bias. Fifth, longitudinal research is needed to determine whether the effects of specific factors are short-term or emerge through cumulative and developmental processes over time.
These directions for future research not only contribute to integrating gerontology, lifelong education, and social capital theories, but also provide subsequent researchers with new avenues for deepening and advancing the theoretical linkages among these fields.
