With the recent proliferation of DC power grids, such as PV systems, the importance of protection against DC series arc fault (DSAF) faults, which threaten the fire safety of the system, has become critical. DSAF are vulnerable to fire accidents due to the lack of zero crossing of currents. In addition, inverter switching noise in PV systems is a major factor that reduces the reliability of arc detection. To address these issues, a novel DC series arc detection algorithm based on frequency spectrum variation analysis is proposed in this paper. The proposed system hardware designs an active band-pass filter to amplify the arc-specific high-frequency signal centered on the 14 kHz band and suppress frequencies outside the frequency analysis band. An FFT analysis is performed and a standard deviation-based arc discrimination metric is introduced to quantify the spectral variability during steady state and arcing. To verify the performance of the proposed algorithm, a 3 kW photovoltaic system was constructed and experiments were conducted under two types of inverters with different switching frequency characteristics. The experimental results show that the proposed method can accurately identify arcing without errors even in environments where the noise characteristics of the inverter change, and can interrupt the fault within 15 ms on average after the arc occurs, meeting the requirements of international standards such as UL 1699B. The proposed method in this paper has low computational complexity and can be implemented in real-time on low-cost microprocessors. It is also expected to contribute to improving the fire safety of DC power grids, including photovoltaic systems, by showing robust detection performance under various noise environments.
