This study examined the effects of teachers’ responses to young children’s negative emotions on teacher–child interactions, with a particular focus on the mediating role of teachers’ cognitive flexibility. For this purpose, this study set up the following research questions.
1. What is the relationship among teachers’ responses to young children’s negative emotions, teacher–child interactions, and teachers’ cognitive flexibility?
2. How do teachers’ responses to young children’s negative emotions influence teacher–child interactions?
3. Does teachers’ cognitive flexibility mediate the relationship between teachers’ responses to young children’s negative emotions and teacher–child interactions?
The participants of this study were 254 early childhood teachers working at early childhood education institutions located in J Province and G City. To measure teachers’ responses to children's negative emotions, the study employed a modified version of Eisenberg and Bernzweig’s (1990) response scale, adapted by Park Soyoung (2024). Teacher–child interaction was assessed using an instrument originally developed by Lee Jeongsook (2003) and later revised by Hwang Moonhee (2013). Cognitive flexibility was measured using a tool developed by Dennis and Vander Wal (2010) and adapted into Korean by Heo Simyang (2011). The collected data were analyzed using SPSS version 29.0.
The results of this study are as follows.
First, significant correlations were found among teachers’ responses to children's negative emotions, teacher–child interactions, and cognitive flexibility. Specifically, when teachers showed higher levels of supportive responses to children’s negative emotions, both teacher–child interaction quality and cognitive flexibility tended to be higher. In contrast, higher levels of non-supportive responses were associated with lower levels of interaction and cognitive flexibility.
Second, teachers’ responses to children's negative emotions had a significant impact on teacher–child interaction. Specifically, supportive responses had a positive effect, while unsupportive responses negatively influenced teacher–child interaction.
Third, teachers’ cognitive flexibility showed a partial mediating effect in the relationship between their responses to children's negative emotions and teacher–child interactions. This result indicates that teachers’ supportive or non-supportive emotional responses affect teacher–child interactions both directly and indirectly through their cognitive flexibility.
These findings highlight the importance of providing early childhood teachers with emotional and cognitive support to promote more positive interactions with children, especially when addressing children’s negative emotions.
In conclusion, the findings indicate that teachers’ responses to children’s negative emotions are closely related to both teacher–child interactions and cognitive flexibility. Teachers’ emotional responses were found to significantly influence the quality of their interactions with children. Furthermore, cognitive flexibility partially mediated the relationship between teachers’ responses to children’s negative emotions and teacher–child interaction.
Therefore, these results suggest that in order to enhance the quality of teacher–child interactions, it is important to promote early childhood teachers’ supportive responses, along with educational support aimed at improving their cognitive flexibility.
