This study aims to examine the white porcelain bottles recovered from the Sinan shipwreck as material evidence of the multi-layered structure of production, distribution, and reception in fourteenth-century East Asian maritime exchange. The dataset comprises 96 bottles, including six maebyeong, thirty-six bottles, and fifty-four lotus-seat bottles, recovered from the ship that sank in 1323 while sailing from Ningbo, China, to Hakata, Japan.
The primary source for this research is The Comprehensive Report on the Underwater Cultural Heritage of Sinan, Vol. 4: White Porcelain (2023), published by the Gwangju National Museum, supplemented by first-hand examination, metric data, and information from the National Relics Management System and the e-Museum database. Using unified analytical criteria, this study classifies bottle types and analyzes form, proportion, size systems, foot structures, manufacturing techniques, and decorative elements.
The results demonstrate that the Sinan white porcelain bottles were products of the standardized production system centered on the Jingdezhen kiln complex, which supplied ritual and export wares under the Yuan dynasty. Their formal regularity and internal variation reflect adaptations to shipping and transport premises under maritime trade conditions rather than mere stylistic preferences.
Furthermore, the bottles are subdivided into multiple functional types beyond the basic categories of maebyeong, bottle, and lotus-seat bottle. These types reveal not only utilitarian purposes related to storage and transport but also implied premises of display, ritual use, and appreciation. In particular, certain lotus-seat bottles and ear-handled forms were re-functionalized as objects of ritual and aesthetic display in the Japanese reception context, indicating that these wares were consumer-oriented export goods produced and shipped in response to the cultural demands of the destination society.
By reinterpreting the Sinan white porcelain bottles as a material culture group shaped through the overlapping processes of production, maritime transportation, and cultural reception, this study elucidates how ceramic vessels in the fourteenth-century East Asian maritime network continuously acquired and transformed their functions and meanings. This approach expands the scope of Sinan shipwreck studies from typological analysis to a broader material-cultural perspective.
