Fallow land refers to agricultural land left uncultivated to improve soil fertility. However, it is more than just an area of suspended cultivation—it is an ecologically significant space where natural succession and ecological recovery occur. In recent years, due to the impacts of climate change and development activities, the ecological functions of such fallow lands have been gradually deteriorating. Sorokdo Island, historically used as a place for the treatment and recuperation of Hansen’s disease patients, has seen a decline in patient population and aging of local residents. As a result, previously cultivated farmlands have been abandoned, leading to a loss of ecological function in those areas. This study conducted ecological assessments and field surveys on three abandoned farmlands within Sorokdo—Gubuk-ri, Shinsaeng-ri, and Sorok-ri—with the aim of restoring them into wetlands with high ecological functionality. The ecological analysis revealed that all three sites possess favorable conditions for vegetation growth, including mild temperatures, suitable soil properties, and effective drainage. The sites also feature low elevations and gentle internal slopes, forming topographic conditions conducive to long-term water retention during rainfall events. Vegetation surveys identified a total of four plant communities—Juncus effusus, Typha orientalis, Miscanthus sacchariflorus–Juncus effusus, and Miscanthus sacchariflorus–Imperata cylindrica—comprising 89 taxa, including 81 species, 4 varieties, and 4 subspecies across 36 families and 76 genera. Currently, signs of terrestrialization were observed in portions of all three sites, suggesting that continued neglect may result in the loss of wetland function. To prevent this, it is essential to repair outdated groundwater facilities across all sites, thereby converting dry zones back into moist areas. In particular, for Sorok-ri, where terrestrialization is rapidly progressing, the existing linear water channels should be redesigned into curved shapes to enhance water retention over longer periods. This study is significant in that it presents ecological analyses and restoration strategies for fallow lands in Sorokdo Island, where ecological research has been limited. The findings can serve as a valuable foundation for future studies on fallow land utilization in rural areas and for ecological restoration projects.
