The rapid expansion of digital networks has accelerated the emergence of a
hyperconnected society, yet individuals in contemporary culture increasingly
experience emotional disconnection and existential isolation marked by extreme
individualization. This paradoxical condition calls for a reconsideration of how
relationships are formed, perceived, and sustained, while simultaneously
demanding that art propose new perceptual and conceptual frameworks for
understanding the conditions of human existence. This dissertation examines
how the abstract and intangible concept of relationality can be translated into
visual form through collaborative artistic practices with image- and
video-generative artificial intelligence, centering on the author's own artistic
works as a practice-based inquiry.
Relationality is approached not as a fixed or stable entity, but as a dynamic
and processual state continuously produced and transformed through the
entanglement of self and other, virtuality and reality, and human and machine.
Within this framework, generative AI is redefined not as an automated tool,
but as a collaborative agent that negotiates meaning with the human artist and
co-produces aesthetic outcomes. The study investigates how relational
conditions characteristic of hyperconnectivity and atomized subjectivity can be
materially and visually articulated through such human-AI collaboration.
Methodologically, the research adopts a practice-based approach that positions
artistic creation itself as the primary site of analysis. Image and video generati
ve AI systems, including MidJourney, DALL-E, and Sora, are employed as bot
h creative instruments and collaborative partners. The research systematically
documents and analyzes the entire creative process, encompassing ideation, pro
mpt design, iterative interaction with AI systems, selection and interpretation o
f generated outputs, and subsequent digital and physical post-production. A tot
al of 847 prompt experiments and approximately 3,200 generated images and v
ideos constitute a relational practice in which artistic intention and algorithmic
contingency continuously intersect and are recalibrated. In particular, prompt en
gineering functions as a translational aesthetic, converting human thought into
machine-interpretable language and revealing micro-relational dynamics betwee
n human and nonhuman agents.
The theoretical framework draws on Nicolas Bourriaud's relational aesthetics,
alongside Judith Butler's concept of vulnerability, Byung-Chul Han's analysis of
the fatigue society, and Zygmunt Bauman's theory of liquid modernity, to
contextualize contemporary relational structures within philosophical and
socio-cultural discourse. Through this synthesis, relationality is reconfigured
as an expanded concept in which sensory experience, social conditions, and
technological mediation are layered and interdependent, allowing for an
examination of how relationships between human and nonhuman actors are
visually articulated in a posthuman environment.
The artistic analysis focuses on three major series by the researcher. Glaze of
Life employs ceramic textures and references to kintsugi to metaphorically
visualize human vulnerability and the possibility of repair, with AI-generated
surface fractures simultaneously evoking relational wounds and connective
potential. Ignition Relations explores emotional expenditure and energetic flow
in relational encounters through the materiality of melting and extinguishing
candles, utilizing generative video AI to examine temporal layers of relational
persistence and dissolution. Am I Mickey? interrogates fluid identity and
relational instability within consumer culture by transforming a mass-cultural
icon, thereby visually addressing the erosion of originality and subjectivity.
This study demonstrates that collaboration with generative AI can function as
a viable artistic methodology for translating abstract thought into visual form.
The creative trajectory-from linguistic instruction to digital image generation
and further expansion into physical media and spatial installation-operates as
an artistic attempt to re-sensitize relational perception within increasingly
virtualized environments. By presenting concrete cases of relational
visualization in contemporary art, this practice-based methodology contributes
to ongoing academic discussions on artistic authorship, creative agency, and the
evolving conditions of art-making in the technological era
