This study systematically investigates a tri-layer electrolyte architecture based on 1 mol% ceria-doped 10 mol% scandia-stabilized zirconia (1Ce10ScSZ) to improve the performance and durability of electrolyte-supported reversible solid oxide cells (RSOCs). The proposed tri-layer design consists of a dense 1Ce10ScSZ core electrolyte, combined with a degradation barrier layer on the fuel-electrode side and a reaction barrier layer on the air-electrode side, aiming to simultaneously mitigate conductivity degradation and interfacial reactions.
Electrochemical performance was evaluated in both fuel-cell (FC) and electrolysis-cell (EC) modes using I–V characterization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and distribution of relaxation times (DRT) analysis. Measurements were conducted from 750 to 800 °C in 50 °C increments while supplying humidified hydrogen and air to the fuel and air electrodes, respectively, at 250 sccm each. To identify which cell elements are affected by the barrier layers, EIS spectra were additionally collected under systematically varied thermodynamic parameters, including temperature (750–800 °C), oxygen partial pressure at the air electrode (pO2,air = 0.02–0.21 atm), water vapor partial pressure at the fuel electrode (pH2O,fuel = 0.03–0.5 atm), and applied current density (−200 ≤ current density / mA·cm−2 ≤ +200). The EIS data were further deconvoluted by DRT to separate frequency-dependent peaks and correlate them with individual electrochemical processes, thereby elucidating the origins of performance differences.
When gadolinium-doped ceria (GDC) was employed as the fuel-side degradation barrier (Cell TG-GDC), pronounced electrode–electrolyte interfacial degradation was observed. In addition, an unusually large low-frequency capacitance of approximately 2.49 F·cm−2 was detected, consistent with the chemical capacitance behavior reported for doped ceria, indicating that Ce-containing compositions are not suitable as degradation barriers under reducing conditions. In contrast, the optimized cell incorporating a YSZ degradation barrier with a NiO–YSZ fuel electrode (Cell TY-YSZ) achieved a peak power density of 1.29 W·cm−2 at 800 °C in FC mode. Moreover, in EC mode, Cell TY-ScSZ delivered a high current density of 1.26 A·cm−2 at 800 °C and 1.3 V, demonstrating that the tri-layer design provides excellent electrochemical performance in both FC and EC operation.
The EIS/DRT results reveal that the performance improvement with the YSZ degradation barrier is primarily associated with a reduced contribution from surface-reaction kinetics. The YSZ layer is interpreted to act as an effective buffer that mitigates Ce reduction and the accompanying interfacial damage, not only under low-pO2 reducing conditions in FC mode but also under EC operation where a locally extremely low oxygen chemical potential (μO2) can develop at the interface. Finally, under identical long-term test conditions at 800 °C, the tri-layer cell exhibited a voltage drop of 5% over the first 110 h, compared with 7% for the bi-layer cell, corresponding to an approximately 30% improvement in stability and supporting that the YSZ barrier effectively suppresses Ce reduction and interfacial degradation.
