Rice is a representative crop in South Korea, utilized not only as the staple food rice but also as forage and composting. Therefore, verifying the safety of pesticide residues across the entire food and feed chains is essential. This study aimed to evaluate the time-dependent residue behavior of the tested fungicides fenoxanil and thifluzamide in different parts of rice plants under field conditions and to examine the safety at harvest and the validity of residue management standards. After treating rice plants with the two pesticides under field conditions, samples were collected at 0, 1, 3, 5, 7, and 14 days, separated by plant part (grain, leaf, stem, and root). Each plant part was pretreated with the QuEChERS method and the samples were analyzed by LC-MS/MS for quantitative and qualitative determination. The analytical method ensured linearity by applying matrix matched calibration, and both recovery rates and precision met acceptable levels. Furthermore, the first-order dissipation equation 𝐶𝐶𝑡𝑡 = 𝐶𝐶0𝑒𝑒−𝑘𝑘𝑡𝑡 was applied to calculate the rate constant k and half-life for each plant part. Substituting the rate constant k and initial concentration yielded the predicted residual levels (mg/kg) at theoretical harvest dates. Fenoxanil residues in grains ranged from
3.15 to 0.51 mg/kg, meeting the maximum residue limit (MRL, 1.0 mg/kg) at the final sampling. Leaf residues ranged from 17.90 to 2.05 mg/kg, and stem residues ranged from 1.00 to 0.30 mg/kg. The combined leaf and stem residue levels, converted to straw equivalent, were 5.39 mg/kg on the treatment date, 2.20 mg/kg at 7 days, and 0.70 mg/kg at 14 days, remaining below the 10 mg/kg standard for feed straw at all time points. Root residues were 0.01 mg/kg on the application date and increased to 0.48 mg/kg after 14 days. Thifluzamide residues in grains ranged from 0.58 to 0.10 mg/kg, and although day-0 residues exceeded the rice grain MRL (0.3 mg/kg), residues at the final sampling complied with the standard. Leaf residues ranged from 3.81 to 0.70 mg/kg, and stem residues ranged from 0.21 to 0.06 mg/kg. The combined leaf and stem residue levels, converted to straw equivalent, were 1.15 mg/kg at the application date, 0.54 mg/kg at 7 days, and 0.21 mg/kg at 14 days, remaining below the feed straw standard of 5.0 mg/kg at all time points. Root residues increased to 0.03 mg/kg on the spray date and 0.14 mg/kg after 14 days. For both pesticides, residues in the aboveground parts decreased over time, while a relative increase in root residues was observed. This is interpreted as a combined effect of pesticide absorption into roots from the topsoil immediately after application, leaching of pesticides from the aboveground parts due to rainfall, and reabsorption of pesticides that migrated into the topsoil. Residue levels in grains and straw harvested on the harvest date met all domestic maximum residue limit
management standards, supporting safety from the production stage to the feed stage under standard application conditions. This study evaluated the residue patterns of the fungicides fenoxanil and thifluzamide in different parts of rice plants to calculate pesticide reduction indices and derive theoretically predicted residue levels based on these. This contributes to establishing safety assessment standards necessary for managing rice for food and forage by providing a prototype residue prediction model applicable in the field and offering a basis for predicting and determining residue levels in advance.
