This study aimed to comprehensively evaluate the distribution, contamination levels, potential ecological risks, and industrial influence of heavy metals in surface marine sediments from eleven coastal areas affected by major industrial activities in Korea, including Incheon, Donghae, Boryeong, Yeosu-Gwangyang, Samcheonpo, Pyeongtaek, Daesan, Yeonggwang, Ulsan, Busan, and Gori. A total of 110 surface sediment samples were collected from the upper 0–2 cm layer using a Van Veen grab sampler. Sediment physical and geochemical properties were characterized through analysis of grain size composition(Gravel–Sand–Mud), total organic carbon(TOC) and heavy metal concentration in each study area.
Sediment contamination was assessed using contamination factor (CF), geoaccumulation index (Igeo), and pollution load index (PLI), based on the geological and sedimentological characteristics of Korean coastal environments. Metal-specific background values were applied according to previously established regional or global natural background levels. In addition, potential ecological risks were evaluated by comparing measured concentrations with sediment quality guidelines, including threshold effect level (TEL) and probable effect level (PEL).
The comparison with sediment quality guidelines indicated that sediments from Donghae, Boryeong, Samcheonpo, Pyeongtaek, Daesan, and Yeonggwang generally exhibited low ecological risk, with all sampling stations under both TEL and PEL criteria. In contrast, exceedances of TEL or PEL values for certain metals, including Zn, Cd, Pb, Cu, As, and Hg, were observed at several stations in Incheon, Yeosu-Gwangyang, Ulsan, Busan, and Gori. Notably, Ulsan and Busan showed a relatively high number of stations exceeding guideline values, suggesting a stronger influence of industrial activities in these areas.
The results of CF analysis further revealed distinct spatial patterns of heavy metal accumulation among the study areas. Incheon, Samcheonpo, Daesan, and Yeonggwang generally exhibited CF values below 1 for most metals, indicating background-level conditions or non-contaminated status. Conversely, elevated CF values for Cd and As, and Hg, were observed in Donghae, Boryeong, Yeosu-Gwangyang, Pyeongtaek, and Gori. Particularly, high accumulation levels were identified in Ulsan for As, Pb, and Zn, and in Busan for Cd, As, Pb, and Hg. Similar contamination trends were consistently showed by the Igeo and PLI results.
A comparison with the distribution of industrial facilities indicated that higher metal concentrations and contamination indices were associated with areas characterized by intensive industrial activities, such as petrochemical complexes, large-scale power plants, and major port and logistics hubs. In contrast, areas with relatively limited industrial influence generally exhibited metal concentrations close to background levels.
Overall, this study provides a comprehensive assessment of heavy metal contamination in surface marine sediments from industrially influenced coastal areas of Korea and provide fundamental scientific data that can support coastal environmental management, identification of pollution sources, and the establishment of long-term monitoring strategies.
