This study, grounded in complexity theory, explores directions for innovating future geography education in an era shaped by artificial intelligence (AI). By integrating generative AI(Gen AI) with the concept of an emergent learning web, the study seeks to propose a reconstructive orientation and viable alternatives for future geography education. Specifically, it argues for the necessity of shifting toward a complexity education paradigm, reconceptualizes geographical knowledge and geographical learning accordingly, and reconstructs geography education through an emergent learning web that incorporates Gen AI as an agency. The study addresses three research questions: (1) How can geographical knowledge and geographical learning be reconceptualized from the perspective of the complexity education paradigm, and what theoretical grounds does this perspective provide for conceptualizing an emergent learning web? (2) What educational status and roles does Gen AI hold within a geographical learning web across ontological, epistemological, and ethical dimensions? (3) How does a Gen AI–based emergent learning web reconfigure the content, process, and environment of geographical learning, and what implications does this hold for the direction of future geography education? To answer these questions, this theoretical and conceptual inquiry collected and reviewed domestic and international books, journal articles, and theses, supplemented by reports from relevant institutions (e.g., the Ministry of Education, the Korea Educational Development Institute, and UNESCO). The analysis was conducted primarily through theoretical exploration and concept analysis, complemented by metaphorical analysis and the construction of a hypothetical lesson scenario. As a foundational study, this research establishes the theoretical basis of a ‘Gen AI–based emergent learning web’ by integratively examining Gen AI, the complexity education paradigm, and geography education discourse. It further proposes philosophical and methodological foundations and a conceptual framework for future field-based research in geography education. The discussion is organized around three axes: (1) a paradigm shift toward complexity geography education, (2) repositioning the educational status of Gen AI in geography education, and (3) reconstructing and enacting a Gen AI–based emergent learning web. Based on this logical structure, the findings of this study can be summarized into the following three points. First, the study diagnoses the limitations of current geography education by reading changes in educational paradigms through shifting conceptions of knowledge and learning. From the perspectives of standardized and constructivist paradigms, current geography education still tends to rely on standardized goals and linear procedures, thereby failing to sufficiently represent the dynamic and contextual complexity of geographical phenomena. It also remains constrained by an epistemological frame that reduces learning to human-centered cognitive activity, limiting its ability to capture geographical knowledge as something generated and transformed through networks of human–nonhuman interactions. In contrast, the complexity education paradigm offers key insights for innovating future geography education by rethinking knowledge and learning as relational and processual. Future-oriented complexity geography education presupposes learning in which meaning and practice emerge through interaction and calls for designing learning as a self-organizing process. Accordingly, geographical learning should be designed to strengthen learner’s empowerment by connecting inquiry to the contexts of everyday life and to cultivate geographical and civic competencies through practice. Moreover, by enacting restorative geography education grounded in relational geographical thinking that includes human and nonhuman agents and embraces marginalized knowledges, an alternative pathway for sustainable innovation in future geography education can be articulated. Second, the study analyzes the educational status of Gen AI across ontological, epistemological, and ethical layers and repositions it as an agency within a geographical learning web. While research on Gen AI in geography education has expanded, existing discussions have largely focused on curriculum content or instructional methods, and relatively few studies have examined Gen AI’s relational dynamics and educational status in an integrated manner. This study conceptualizes Gen AI not merely as a learning-support tool but as an agential subject that mediates interactions and reshapes the flow of learning within networks entangling human, nonhuman, technological, and environmental elements. The analysis suggests that Gen AI can be reconstructed as a relational and fractal being that mediates nonlinear interactions and induces emergent patterns and meanings. In an emergent learning web, Gen AI may enhance diversity, redundancy, and neighbor interactions through context-based adaptive responses, multi-turn interaction, and multi-modal information generation, thereby fostering the potential for emergence. In practice-oriented scenes of complexity geography education—such as geographical inquiry, discussion and debate, and project-based learning—Gen AI can function as a facilitator of sense-making, an expander of inquiry, and a learning mediator. This indicates the possibility of extending discussions of Gen AI integration beyond theory toward the levels of instructional design and classroom enactment. Third, based on the preceding theoretical discussions, the study reconstructs geographical learning through a generative AI–based emergent learning web and explores practical applications and implementation tasks for complexity geography education. To address limitations in complexity research that often remains at a macro-level analysis of learning systems, the study integrates Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles with complexity-based learning mechanisms while considering both the intrinsic complexity of geography as a discipline and the dynamics of Gen AI. In this view, a Gen AI–based emergent learning web is defined as a learning ecology in which multiple agency are interdependently connected, self-organize, and generate and transform meanings and outcomes. It is also positioned as a meta-level design principle for geography education and a relational platform where diverse teaching–learning activities converge, connecting theory and practice in an integrative dimension. Ultimately, complexity geography education aims to become a space for relational engagement and co-creation in the context of lived experience, orienting toward co-evolution. The findings suggest that a Gen AI–based emergent learning web can be applied to complexity geography education that addresses wicked problems and investigates multi-scale relationality, contributing to understanding the complex interactions of AI-integrated learning processes and fostering emergence. Furthermore, by reconfiguring relationships among educational participants and deriving practical implications for dynamic geographical learning in real educational contexts, complexity geography education provides meaningful insights for innovating future geography education. Contemporary schooling faces serious challenges, including deepening educational inequality and social polarization, within structural constraints shaped by standardized paradigms. This study interprets such crises as opportunities for transformation and calls for a shift toward the complexity education paradigm emphasizing interconnectedness, circularity, and integrative thinking. Accordingly, future geography education should be rethought, redesigned, and operationalized as actionable strategies on a new epistemological foundation. In sum, this study holds theoretical significance in urging a paradigm shift toward complexity education and proposing a practical direction for future geography education that integrates Gen AI with complexity education. By redefining the roles of key educational participants—teachers as affective coordinators of complexity, students as active subjects participating in meaning-making, and Gen AI as an agential mediator that promotes expansive learning—the study provides theoretical and practical grounds for reconstructing geography learning as a learning ecology in which life and knowledge co-evolve. Even under conditions of uncertainty, Gen AI and emergent learning webs are expected to function as key drivers that complement structural limitations of current geography education and facilitate its innovative transformation.
