The purpose of this study was to propose a creative writing instructional plan centered on film music, utilizing the Goal-Based Scenario (GBS) model to foster learners' creative expression and self-directed learning abilities in middle school music classes. This plan was designed based on the core competencies and achievement standards outlined in the 2022 Revised Music Curriculum: "creative thinking skills," "creating music by applying musical intentions or ideas to various media and methods," and "creating and utilizing music in connection with everyday life and taking responsibility for it."
The research methodologies included a combination of literature review and lesson design. The literature review examined the educational characteristics of the GBS model and its applicability to music education. Furthermore, the analysis of the functions and musical techniques of film music led to the selection of accessible creative writing materials for learners. Based on this, a seven-period lesson plan for third-year middle school students was designed. Instructional strategies were presented for the first period, which focused on understanding; the second and third periods, which focused on film music composition; and the sixth period, which focused on video and music editing. Each period was structured around the components of the Goal-Based Scenario (GBS) model and presented in a practical context.
Film music refers to music that students experience on a daily basis through the audiovisual medium of film, and falls within the category of "Music in Life" emphasized in the 2022 Revised Music Curriculum. Therefore, film music composition is not a mimicry of professional composition, but rather a practical learning experience that fosters exploration of musical meaning construction and creative thinking through the process of musically interpreting and expressing scenes. In particular, the process of creating and applying music to films, a visual content that students regularly consume, naturally connects learning content with real-world musical experiences, thereby enhancing motivation. Goal-Based Scenario (GBS) is a teaching and learning model that presents learners with clear goals and realistic tasks, providing them with various tools, information, and feedback to achieve them, creating a realistic learning experience in the form of simulations. Rather than simply imparting knowledge, the teacher functions as a facilitator, assisting learners in problem-solving and creative endeavors. This allows for an open-ended learning structure, where diverse creative outcomes emerge even from the same scene. Learner choice and judgment are central to this learning, fostering self-directed learning, intrinsic motivation, and engagement. In this sense, film music composition classes utilizing GBS transcend the limitations of rote learning and instead foster learner-centered creative activities built on practical understanding and active participation.
The instructional method presented in this study is based on GBS and incorporates step-by-step activities from "scene analysis - music element selection - composition - editing" to facilitate practical application in schools. Furthermore, by utilizing digital tools and the familiar medium of film, the creative process ensures both feasibility and educational effectiveness. In this regard, this study is significant in that it presents a practical application method for utilizing Goal-Based Scenarios (GBS) in actual classrooms. It also holds educational significance in that it demonstrates the potential of lesson design using film music as a medium.
Although this study was design-focused and did not verify its effectiveness through actual classroom application, it is expected to provide learners with a realistic and meaningful learning context, thereby increasing immersion and participation, and fostering self-directed learning and musical creative abilities. Future research should verify the effectiveness of this approach through actual classroom application and analyze learner responses. It is hoped that this will foster learners' understanding of "music in their lives" and foster more active research on music instruction utilizing the Goal-Based Scenario (GBS) model.
