Ammonia (NH3) is primarily emitted from livestock manure management and fertilizer application and is recognized as both a major contributor to odor nuisance and a key precursor of secondary particulate matter(PM2.5). In Korea, current NH₃ emission factors rely mainly on a bottom-up approach based on measurements of ventilation rate and pollutant concentration at individual exhaust points of livestock houses. However, this method suffers from two structural limitations: (1) emission factors derived from a limited number of farms cannot adequately represent the wide variability in livestock species, housing types, and management practices nationwide; and (2) increasing facility size and ventilation complexity make accurate exhaust-level measurements increasingly difficult, leading to substantial uncertainty in farm-level emission estimates. These limitations highlight the need for an alternative estimation framework that can complement or refine existing bottom-up emission factors. To address this issue, the present study established a top-down NH3 emission factor estimation system by integrating field observations with three atmospheric dispersion models AERMOD, CALPUFF, and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) for a livestock-dense region (Yongji-myeon, Gimje-si, Jeollabuk-do). The modeling framework incorporated on-site meteorological measurements and source input parameters derived from animal population, facility characteristics, and CAPSS inventory data. Model predictions during two monitoring periods (spring and summer) were evaluated against observed NH3 concentrations using statistical performance metrics including FAC2, FB, IA, MG, NMSE, NAD, and VG. Model–observation comparisons showed that predictive accuracy varied depending on proximity to sources and prevailing wind conditions. Near-source locations exhibited good agreement across models, whereas downwind sites influenced by multiple sources showed larger spatial variability. CALPUFF demonstrated stable performance in areas with distributed emission sources due to its non-steady Lagrangian puff formulation, while CFD exhibited superior reproduction of plume behavior in the immediate downwind zone. AERMOD showed a tendency to overestimate concentrations under low-wind conditions, reflecting its steady-state assumption. Top-down emission factors were estimated as 4.81, 5.64, and 5.26 kg·animal-1·yr-1 for AERMOD, CALPUFF, and CFD, respectively, all lower than the CAPSS default value of 6.4 kg·animal-1·yr-1. Since the CAPSS value includes emissions from manure application to croplands—an off-site, post-management activity not represented in the modeling domain—the applicability of direct comparison is limited. Therefore, an alternative comparison was performed using the CAPSS facility-level emission factor (2.4 kg·animal-1·yr-1), which includes only emissions occurring within livestock facilities (housing, composting, and manure treatment). When referenced to this facility-only baseline, the recalculated emission factors were 1.81, 2.11, and 1.97 kg·animal-1·yr-1 for AERMOD, CALPUFF, and CFD, respectively, again showing values comparable to or lower than the inventory baseline. These findings indicate that the national inventory may overestimate emissions for some facility types and that region-specific, observation-based corrections are necessary. Overall, this study demonstrates that combining atmospheric dispersion modeling with field observations provides a robust top-down framework for deriving livestock NH3 emission factors. The proposed approach improves the representation of actual emission characteristics in livestock-dense regions and offers a scientific basis for refining national NH₃ inventories and developing effective emission mitigation strategies. Continued long-term monitoring and expansion of observations across diverse livestock systems will further enhance the reliability and applicability of this methodology.
