This study aims to reinterpret the symbolism of the Dangsan tree, traditionally regarded as a sacred presence within Korean folk culture, from the formative perspective of contemporary Korean painting, and to elucidate the affective structures and image-formation principles manifested in the researcher’s artistic practice. Historically, the Dangsan tree has functioned as a spatial point of reference in which communal memory, emotion, and social relations are accumulated. Through rituals and ceremonial practices, it has continuously structured the sensory experiences of community members, operating as a symbolic device that integrates relationships between nature and humans, as well as between individuals and the collective, into a coherent system of meaning. In this context, the Dangsan tree emerged as a central emblem sustaining the order and identity of communal life.
However, in contemporary society marked by rapid industrialization and urbanization, shared experiences of place rooted in communal life have been significantly diminished. Along with this shift, the relational structures between nature and humans once repeatedly accumulated and internalized through everyday environments have been fragmented and transformed into discontinuous experiential conditions. This study addresses these changes by examining how the symbolic legacy of the Dangsan tree can be reconfigured within contemporary Korean painting as an affective and relational visual language.
Even under conditions in which communal experiences of place have been weakened by industrialization and urbanization, the sensory and affective memories accumulated within the symbolism of the Dangsan tree do not entirely disappear. Instead, they persist in transformed forms and are reconstituted as new visual structures within the formative language of contemporary Korean painting. Through the material properties of points, lines, colors, and artistic media, memories of place and affective experiences are translated into visual structures. As a result, the symbolism of the Dangsan tree extends beyond the representation of natural scenery or the repetition of traditional iconography, evolving into an affective image in which memory, emotion, and relational meanings intersect. This formative transformation demonstrates that traditional symbols of nature can continue to generate sustainable systems of meaning within contemporary modes of sensory experience.
In the theoretical framework, the image of the Dangsan tree is interpreted through an integrated approach that brings together the sensory systems shaped by traditional sacred-tree symbolism and folk rituals, phenomenological discussions on bodily perception, and ecological modes of awareness that emphasize the relational dynamics between humans and their environments. In traditional society, the Dangsan tree was understood not merely as a transcendent symbol, but as a spatial point of reference through which community members shared flows of sensation, emotion, and relational experience. Within this perceptual framework, ritual functioned as a practical mechanism that repeatedly reaffirmed these shared experiences. Consequently, place was sustained as a symbolic field in which memory and sensory experience accumulated beyond its physical boundaries, and this experiential structure is transformed in new ways through the formative elements of contemporary Korean painting.
In traditional society, the Dangsan tree was recognized not merely as a transcendent symbol, but as a spatial point of reference through which community members shared flows of sensation, emotion, and relational experience. Within this perceptual framework, ritual functioned as a practical mechanism that repeatedly reaffirmed these shared understandings. As a result, place was sustained as a symbolic field in which memory and sensory experience accumulated beyond physical space, and this experiential structure is transformed in new ways through the formative elements of contemporary Korean painting.
The researcher’s painting practice is positioned as an analytical case through which these theoretical discussions are examined at the level of concrete formative practice. Through the analysis of the artworks, key formative elements are identified, including changes in visual density generated by the accumulation of points; directional structures produced by the continuity and compression of lines; traces of temporality left by the repetition and layering of chromatic strata; tactile sensations conveyed through surface pressure and irregularities; and affective fluctuations revealed through the material properties of the media. Rather than producing isolated effects, these elements operate within an interrelated structure that visually articulates memories of place and the persistence of emotional residues.
The accumulation of points visualizes the layering of time and memory on the pictorial surface, generating subtle rhythms and tensions in the viewer’s gaze through variations in density. The continuity and accumulation of lines reflect traces of movement, imparting flow and directional force within the image plane; through this process, the Dangsan tree is transformed from a static motif into a visual structure that embodies processes of generation and transition. The layering of color and the repetition of chromatic strata move beyond the representation of a single moment, presenting traces of time that are continuously accumulated. This establishes a formative perception of temporality that corresponds to the temporal dimension of the Dangsan tree, which has long served as a repository of communal memory.
Surface texture and pressure integrate tactile perception into visual experience, thereby extending the perceptual scope of painting, while material responsiveness consolidates formative meanings such as growth and injury, disappearance and circulation into a coherent image structure shaped by overlapping processes.
This study adopts a comprehensive methodological framework consisting of three stages a review of relevant literature, an analysis of contemporary art cases from both domestic and international contexts, and an examination of the researcher’s own artworks. Through this multi stage approach, the symbolic meanings of the traditional sacred tree and their modes of transformation within contemporary Korean painting are systematically examined. This process makes it possible to concretely identify how traditional symbolism is translated into affective structures and principles of image formation within the formative compositional strategies of contemporary Korean painting.
As a result, the symbolism of the Dangsan tree in contemporary Korean painting does not remain confined to fixed iconography or as a component of natural scenery. Instead, it is reconstituted as an affective structure and a principle of image formation through formative transformations involving points, lines, colors, and materiality. These findings academically demonstrate that traditional symbols of nature can continue to expand within contemporary modes of sensory experience without rupture, and they clarify that painting can function as a visual field that re-mediates memories of place and communal sensibility.
This study analyzes the intersecting structure in which tradition and contemporaneity, place and sensation, memory and formative language converge, with a focus on the symbolism of the Dangsan tree. The findings demonstrate that affective structures and principles of image formation function as valid analytical units within contemporary Korean painting. By examining the formative transformation of the Dangsan tree’s symbolism and its affective structures, this study clarifies the formative significance of the researcher’s painting practice while proposing an academic interpretive framework for understanding traditional symbolism within contemporary art.
