This study presents an integrated approach to address two critical challenges in the practical application of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) for next-generation lithium-ion battery electrodes: efficient purification and high-concentration aqueous dispersion with low viscosity. SWCNTs are promising conductive additives for silicon-based anodes due to their outstanding electrical conductivity and mechanical strength, yet their commercialization has been limited by the presence of metal impurities and poor dispersibility.
A hybrid purification method combining strong acid treatment and high-temperature chlorine treatment was developed to remove residual catalysts (Fe, Mo) while minimizing damage to the graphitic structure. This approach achieved a purity of up to 94.6% with preserved crystallinity (IG/ID ratio). Furthermore, a dual-dispersion strategy using a polymeric dispersant (PESMA) and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) enabled the formulation of 0.8 wt% SWCNT aqueous slurries with viscosities below 5,300 cPs. The addition of metal hydroxides further reduced viscosity and improved flowability.
The formulated dispersions were applied to actual electrode fabrication and cell testing, demonstrating a >20% reduction in electrode resistance compared to conventional carbon black and achieving an energy density of over 320 Wh/kg. These findings contribute to narrowing the gap between laboratory-scale research and industrial implementation of SWCNT-based conductive materials for high-performance lithium-ion batteries.
