As the use of digital technology in daily life becomes essential, improving digital literacy among older adults has emerged as a key challenge for strengthening self-care capacity and enhancing quality of life. This study aims to explore in depth the impact of digital literacy on self-care among older adults in the context of an era where rapid aging and digital transformation coexist. In particular, by establishing self-efficacy and social support as mediating factors, this study seeks to identify the mediating roles of these variables in the process through which digital literacy strengthens self-care among older adults. Through this, the study aims to reveal the mechanisms that strengthen self-care among older adults and further provide foundational data for establishing welfare policies and practical alter
natives for older adults that correspond to the digital age. For this purpose, a survey was conducted targeting older adults aged 65 and above who use digital devices. A total of 540 questionnaires were distributed, of which 523 were returned. After excluding 8 responses that had many missing answers or were judged to be insincere, 515 questionnaires were ultimately used for analysis. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 29.0 and AMOS 29.0 programs. Descriptive statistical analyses including frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation were conducted to identify the general characteristics of study participants, and the reliability of measurement instruments was verified using Cronbach's α coefficient. Group differences in self-care, digital literacy, self-efficacy, a
nd social support according to sociodemographic characteristics were examined through t-tests and one-way ANOVA, with the Scheffe method used for post-hoc testing. Pearson correlation analysis was conducted to examine relationships among major variables, and hierarchical regression analysis was performed to verify the influence relationships among variables. To verify mediating effects, the validity of the measurement model was confirmed through confirmatory factor analysis, followed by structural equation model fit verification and path analysis. The statistical significance of mediating effects was confirmed using the bootstrapping method. The results of this study can be summarized as follows.
First, examining the general trends of major variables, self-care as perceived by older adults averaged 2.89 points on a 1-4 scale, indicating a
moderate level. Among subfactors, interpersonal relationships scored highest while physical activity scored lowest. The level of digital literacy as
perceived by older adults averaged 3.37 points on a 1-5 scale. Among subfactors, technical usage scored highest while information utilization was
relatively lower. Self-efficacy as perceived by older adults averaged 3.61 points on a 1-5 scale. Among subfactors, social efficacy scored highest w
hile self-achievement was relatively lower. Social support as perceived by older adults averaged 3.69 points on a 1-5 scale, showing above-mode
rate levels. Among subfactors, emotional support scored highest while informational support was relatively lower.
Second, hierarchical regression analysis was conducted to examine the relative influence of variables related to self-care among older adults. Th
e results showed that self-efficacy had the greatest impact on self-care, followed by significant positive effects from social support and digital liter
acy in that order. Among control variables, the higher the education level, the better the subjective economic status, and the better the subjective h
ealth status, the higher the level of self-care. Additionally, the lower the age, the higher the level of self-care.
Third, the multiple parallel mediating effects of self-efficacy and social support were verified in the effect of digital literacy as perceived by olde
r adults on self-care. The results showed that both the direct and indirect effects of digital literacy on self-care were statistically significant. Spec
ifically, digital literacy had significant positive effects on both self-efficacy and social support, and self-efficacy and social support each had significant positive effects on self-care. As a result of verifying the significance of mediating effects using bootstrapping, both indirect effects of digital
literacy on self-care mediated through self-efficacy and social support were statistically significant, and self-efficacy and social support were verif
ied to partially mediate the effect of digital literacy on self-care. The social welfare implications and policy/practical recommendations based on the analytical results derived from this study are as follows.
First, given that a multiple mediating structure where self-efficacy and social support each mediate the relationship between digital literacy and s
elf-care has been confirmed, digital policies targeting older adults should be designed to pursue not merely technical education but an integrated a
pproach that enhances psychological confidence and expands social networks. To this end, the development of digital capacity-building programs wi
thin community care integration systems through collaboration among health, welfare, and information and communication departments is required.
Second, considering the mediating effects of self-efficacy and social support, it is necessary to develop "self-efficacy-based group learning progr
ams" that combine individual confidence enhancement through staged success experiences with peer mutual support. Additionally, if senior-to-senio
r mentoring systems are expanded, mutually positive effects of strengthening mentors' self-efficacy and facilitating mentees' learning can be expected.
Third, given that physical activity was the lowest among self-care subfactors and digital literacy was confirmed to have significant effects on self
-care, with the implementation of the "Integrated Care Support Act" as anopportunity, it is necessary to incorporate digital capacity building as a c
ore element in community integrated care systems and expand digital healthcare services through collaboration among community care institutions s
uch as senior welfare centers, senior halls, and public health centers. Fourth, given that older adults' information utilization ability was lowest among digital literacy domains, it is necessary to strengthen rights-based information literacy education that guarantees digital information access a
s a fundamental right for older adults, and to widely disseminate practice-oriented education that includes guidance on reliable information sources
    and identification of misinformation.
Fifth, to ensure the sustainability of digital literacy education, one-time education should be avoided, and alongside establishing community-based
support systems, it is necessary to improve digital device accessibility and provide devices to vulnerable populations in parallel.
This study is significant in that it empirically analyzed the impact of digital literacy on self-care among adults aged 65 and above. In particular, by con
firming the multiple parallel mediating mechanism of self-efficacy and social support from the perspectives of social cognitive theory and self-care
theory, it suggested that interventions integrating psychological and social factors beyond simple technical education are necessary to promote selfcare among older adults.
