Acoustic signals are a key means of communication that allow many animals to convey information without physical contact. In birds, vocalizations play
crucial roles in mate attraction and territorial defense, both of which directly influence reproductive success and survival. Vocal activity patterns are shaped
by a range of factors, including annual cycles, diel rhythms, habitat conditions, and climatic variables. Therefore, this study analyzed the vocal activity patterns of the Eurasian Nuthatch (Sitta europaea) using automated sound recording devices (ARUs) installed at 29 sites across 10 national parks in South Korea, in relation to temporal, diel, habitat, and climatic factors. The results showed that vocal frequency increased from mid-February, peaked between mid-April and early May, and then declined, exhibiting a nonlinear seasonal pattern closely linked to the breeding cycle. Diel patterns revealed the highest vocal activity between 06:00 and 09:00, suggesting strong associations with mate attraction and territorial defense. Among habitat and geographic factors, higher latitude, age class, and greater proportions of coniferous and mixed forests were significantly associated with increased vocal activity. Climatic variables also had significant effects on both vocal frequency and dawn chorus timing. Birdsong is transmitted through learning, and cumulative learning errors over time can lead to geographic variation. Such variation can be explained by two main frameworks: the isolation-by-distance model, which describes divergence with increasing geographic distance, and the acoustic adaptation hypothesis, which predicts evolutionary tuning of signals to local habitat acoustics. This study examined how S. europaea song varies under the combined influence of geographic and environmental factors. A total of 36 recording sites across 13 national parks were analyzed, encompassing five song types (Sa, Fa, Ud, Tr, and De). Canonical correlation analysis (CCA) revealed that both latitude and longitude significantly influenced song variation, and Mantel tests showed that acoustic dissimilarity increased with geographic distance across all song types. These results suggest that the Korean mountain ranges play a dual role in facilitating song transmission while simultaneously restricting cultural exchange. Moreover, significant differences in song-type usage ratios were found among national parks; in particular, Type_De showed localized disappearance in the southwestern regions, interpreted as cultural drift. Environmental analyses indicated that forest cover, temperature, and precipitation significantly affected the frequency and temporal structures of songs, supporting the acoustic adaptation hypothesis. Complex forest structures and harsher climatic conditions promoted adjustments in temporal features, whereas higher temperatures, elevations, and simpler habitats led to modulation of frequency and structural traits to maintain signal stability. In conclusion, this study demonstrated that vocal activity patterns of the Eurasian Nuthatch, as revealed through ARU-based monitoring, reflect breeding ecology and habitat preferences. Furthermore, it multivariately confirmed that song variation arises from the combined effects of geographic and environmental factors. These findings provide valuable baseline data for understanding the breeding ecology and vocal variation of forest-dwelling birds and highlight the potential of automated acoustic monitoring as a longterm ecological and conservation tool.
