The purpose of this study was to empirically examine how sound effects and the presence of an avatar in extended reality–based simulation learning influence learners’ cognitive load, self-efficacy, and learning satisfaction. To achieve this purpose, the following research questions were formulated. First, what effects does the presence or absence of sound effects have on learners’ cognitive load, self-efficacy, and learning satisfaction in an extended reality–based cardiopulmonary resuscitation simulation for high school students? Second, what effects does the presence or absence of an avatar have on learners’ cognitive load, self-efficacy, and learning satisfaction in the same context? Third, is there a significant interaction effect between sound effects and avatar presence on learners’ cognitive load, self-efficacy, and learning satisfaction?
A total of 100 male high school students, aged 15 to 18, participated in this study. The participants were randomly assigned to one of four groups, with 25 students in each group, based on the presence or absence of sound effects and the presence or absence of an avatar. An extended reality–based cardiopulmonary resuscitation simulation was designed and developed for each experimental condition and used as the instructional tool. Participants engaged in simulation activities within extended reality environments that varied according to their assigned group. All simulation components were identical across groups except for the independent variables. The simulation-based learning activity lasted approximately 15 minutes, and each experimental session took about 35 minutes in total.
A 2 × 2 factorial design was employed in this experiment, with the presence or absence of sound effects and the presence or absence of an avatar as the independent variables. Learners’ cognitive load, self-efficacy, and learning satisfaction were measured as dependent variables representing the learning experience. A two-way analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was conducted, with pre-test self-efficacy included as a covariate.
The results can be summarized as follows. First, sound effects and avatar presence demonstrated a significant interaction effect on cognitive load in extended reality–based simulation learning. A simple main effects analysis indicated that avatar presence had a significant effect when sound effects were absent, and sound effects had a significant effect when an avatar was absent. Second, avatar presence significantly influenced learners’ self-efficacy in extended reality–based simulation learning. Third, sound effects significantly affected learners’ learning satisfaction.
These findings confirm that interactions among design elements may have a more substantial impact on learners’ cognitive processing than the independent effects of individual design elements in extended reality learning environments. Additionally, the use of avatars was identified as an effective design strategy for enhancing learners’ self-efficacy in simulations for extended reality–based procedural skills training. Although sound effects can improve the quality and completeness of extended reality learning environments, they should be applied cautiously, as they may negatively affect learners’ satisfaction. This study is significant because it empirically analyzes how design elements such as sound effects and avatars influence learners’ cognitive load, self-efficacy, and learning satisfaction in extended reality–based simulations for high school students, thereby providing concrete guidelines for the design principles of simulation learning utilizing extended reality technology. Furthermore, from a practical perspective, this study highlights the educational potential of extended reality–based simulations in learning domains where procedural skills and decision-making—such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation—are critically important.
