This study examined how Mandarin Chinese (MC) loanwords were phonologically adapted in English within the framework of Optimality Theory (OT) (Kager, 1999; McCarthy, 2002; McCarthy, 2008; McCarthy & Prince, 1993a, b; Prince & Smolensky, 1993). Whereas most prior research on Chinese-origin items in English has focused on etymological, semantic, or lexicographic dimensions (e.g., Guo, 2020; Knowlton, 1970; Quatrini, 2022; Wu, 2019; Zhong, 2019), the present work provides the first systematic, theory-driven examination of their phonological adaptation. Although OT has been employed in a range of loanword studies, many such analyses either integrate OT with perceptual modelling (e.g., Boersma & Hamann, 2009; Kenstowicz & Suchato, 2006; Yip, 2006) or restrict their empirical domain to a narrow subset of segments or processes (e.g., Lin, 2008; Wang, 2021). In contrast, this dissertation argues that the major and recurrent patterns of Mandarin-to-English adaptation (including segmental substitutions, tonal loss, and syllable-structure restructuring) can be accounted for through the interaction of markedness and faithfulness constraints within OT, without recourse to additional theoretical mechanisms.
The dataset employed in this study was drawn from the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) Online, and the analysis focused on how MC consonants, vowels, tones, and syllable structures were integrated into Received Pronunciation (RP) English. The analysis showed that many Mandarin segments mapped transparently onto existing English categories, while segments absent from the RP inventory were replaced by their closest permissible counterparts. Within OT, these outcomes followed from language-specific rankings of universal markedness and faithfulness constraints, realized through structural change processes. Attested adaptations included the deletion of lexical tones and retroflex vowels (e.g., Mandarin /ər/ surfaced as /əː/); substitution of segments bearing marked features (e.g., Mandarin retroflexes /ʈʂ, ʈʂh, ʂ, ʐ/ mapped onto English palato-alveolars /ʤ, ʧ, ʃ, ʒ/); neutralization of Mandarin aspiration contrast in plosives (e.g., the /p/-/ph/ distinction was lost when adapted as English /b/-/p/); neutralization of mid and low vowels (e.g., Mandarin [æn] and [ɑŋ] both surfaced as /a/ plus a nasal); coalescence in the adaptation of palatals (e.g., the consonant-glide sequence /tsj/, which underlay Mandarin /ɕ/, was fused into English /ʃ/); decomposition of the high rounded vowel /y/ and glide /ɥ/ into sequences like [ju]/[jʊ]/[jw]; largely transparent mapping of diphthongs (e.g., Mandarin /əu/ became English /əʊ/); and re-parsing of syllable structure to satisfy English phonotactics (e.g., Mandarin word [jæn.æn] was adapted into English [jɛˈnan]).
Alongside these systematic patterns, a small set of irregular cases was identified, attributable not to grammar but to historical and sociolinguistic factors, such as intermediary transmission languages, variation in transcription systems, diachronic shifts in Mandarin pronunciation, editorial and lexicographic conventions, and ongoing phonetic change. Crucially, these exceptions did not undermine the overall claim. Rather, they represented peripheral effects external to the phonological grammar and fell outside what OT was designed to predict.
Consequently, this study brought to light four central results. First, the analyses demonstrated that Mandarin loanwords underwent predictable phonological restructuring when integrated into English, and that OT remained a powerful and flexible framework for analyzing loanword phonology. Second, the results provided cross-linguistic support for the general preference for segment preservation over deletion (Miao, 2005; Paradis & LaCharité, 1997; Uffmann, 2004). Third, by introducing new data-driven constraints, refining feature-based analyses of Mandarin palatal adaptation and /y/ (and /ɥ/) decomposition, and developing a moraic account of vowel adaptation, this study showed that the full range of Mandarin-to-English adaptations could be systematically captured by OT. Finally, the findings highlighted the crucial role that the interface between segmental features and prosodic structure played in shaping loanword outcomes.
