Over the past decade, global maritime logistics systems have been transformed by a convergence of overlapping disruption forces whose effects spill across borders, markets, and time. Geopolitical instability, escalating trade tensions, and increasingly stringent environmental regulations have imposed new pressures on the functioning of maritime supply chains. While existing research examines these forces individually, little empirical work has captured their combined, interacting, and capability-based effects on supply-chain stress, adaptability, and long-term sustainability. This gap limits our understanding of how systemic disruptions propagate through maritime networks and reshape their resilience foundations.
This study empirically examines an integrated disruption–resilience framework where geopolitical conflict, trade-policy frictions, and environmental regulatory pressure act as external forces shaping supply-chain stress and adaptive capacity, with downstream implications for maritime supply chain sustainability. The analytical framework draws jointly on dynamic capabilities, contingency, and institutional resilience perspectives, framing sustainability as an outcome shaped by the interaction between external pressures and internal adaptive processes. The analysis relies on a country-year panel for 2019–2024 and applies a layered econometric identification strategy that combines fixed-effects estimation, instrumental-variable extensions, dynamic panel techniques, and simultaneous-equation modeling. This approach strengthens causal interpretation, mitigates endogeneity concerns, and uncovers the structural interdependencies across disruption pressures, stress responses, adaptive capability, and sustainability.
The empirical findings reveal a multidimensional and asymmetric disruption–resilience system. First, trade tensions and environmental regulations consistently increase supply-chain stress, while the effect of geopolitical conflict depends on countries’ exposure to global trade: conflicts generate higher stress only in highly open economies, whereas structurally disconnected states exhibit lower measured stress due to limited integration into global maritime networks. Second, geopolitical instability and trade tensions are associated with increases in adaptability, whereas instrumented supply chain stress has a strong negative effect on adaptability, indicating capability erosion under sustained pressure. The theorized inverted-U relationship between stress and adaptability (H7) receives no empirical support. Instead, the System GMM results show a strictly negative and concave relationship, with both the linear and squared stress terms entering negatively. This indicates that rising stress consistently suppresses adaptability at all observed levels, with no turning point at which adaptability recovers under extreme stress. Third, higher levels of supply chain stress are consistently associated with substantial reductions in maritime sustainability, whereas the contribution of adaptability varies with the identification approach and does not remain statistically stable across estimators. Environmental regulation, while highly significant across specifications, is associated with lower short-term sustainability performance, consistent with adjustment and compliance cost pressures within the observed period. Finally, the hypothesized mediation and moderation mechanisms behave differently from expectations: stress does not mediate disruptions into higher adaptability but rather transmits external pressures into reduced adaptive capacity; and no significant buffering effect of adaptability on the stress–sustainability relationship is detected.
Taken together, these results advance maritime logistics scholarship by providing (1) an empirically validated, multi-pathway framework linking major disruption pressures to sustainability outcomes; (2) causal evidence that adaptive capabilities can degrade under chronic global stress, challenging conventional assumptions of stress-induced learning; and (3) a panel-econometric foundation that can be extended as longer-run regulatory, geopolitical, and congestion-related data become available. The findings provide actionable points for policymakers, port authorities, and shipping carriers striving to strengthen resilience, reduce systemic stress, and promote sustainable maritime logistics under conditions of persistent global uncertainty.
