Ventilation rate is a key determinant of ammonia emission factor estimation, indoor microclimate management, and thermal environment control in naturally ventilated cattle barns. However, quantitative measurement of ventilation rate remains inherently challenging due to the open structural characteristics of such facilities, where indoor airflow patterns continuously vary in response to changes in ambient wind direction and velocity. In barns equipped with large sidewall openings, pronounced spatial non-uniformity in air velocity distribution is commonly observed, rendering conventional approaches—where a single-point air velocity measurement is assumed to represent the entire opening—structurally inadequate. These limitations substantially increase uncertainty in emission factor estimation and hinder regulatory compliance as well as the development of smart ventilation control technologies.
In this study, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD)-based framework was developed to optimise ventilation-rate measurement systems for naturally ventilated cattle barns of different scales. Long-term ventilation measurements were conducted at 29 individual openings of a target barn to establish a reference dataset for CFD model validation. Three CFD models with increasing levels of animal representation were subsequently developed and systematically evaluated: (i) a model without animals, (ii) a porous-media model, and (iii) a detailed animal-resolved model. The predictive performance of each model was quantitatively assessed against the measured ventilation rates.
The animal-resolved model explicitly reproduced flow resistance induced by cattle within the animal-occupied zone (AOZ) by incorporating detailed geometric representations, surface roughness, and metabolic heat release using ANSYS Fluent. Grid independence was ensured using approximately 14 million polyhedral cells. In contrast, the porous-media model represented the AOZ as a simplified domain with prescribed flow resistance and heat sources, achieving substantially improved computational efficiency. Validation results revealed that the no-animal model exhibited pronounced overestimation, with errors of 81.9–166.4% for individual openings and 43.2–110.5% for total ventilation rate. The porous-media model reduced errors to 51.3–70.5% for individual openings and 22.2–31.3% for total ventilation rate, while the animal-resolved model achieved the highest accuracy, with errors of 39.1–58.6% and 12.2–28.3%, respectively. These findings demonstrate that increased turbulence and wake formation induced by animal bodies significantly enhance flow resistance, and neglecting these effects inevitably leads to systematic overestimation of ventilation rate.
The validated CFD framework was further applied to standard cattle barn designs accommodating 80 and 120 animals, based on the 2024 standard barn specifications issued by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs of Korea. Sensor number and placement were optimised for sidewall openings and entrances under eight wind directions (E, ESE, SE, SSE, S, SSW, SW, and WSW) at a reference wind speed of 2 m s-1. Results indicated that total ventilation rate representativeness was primarily governed by sidewall openings, with sensor distribution along the longitudinal direction exerting the greatest influence on measurement accuracy. For a single-row configuration, a minimum of eight sensors was required, whereas a two-row configuration achieved mean relative errors below 1% with only four sensors. In contrast, entrance openings contributed marginally to total airflow and exhibited relatively simple flow structures; thus, two sensors were sufficient, with additional installations yielding limited improvements.
This study quantitatively demonstrates that explicit consideration of animal geometry is essential for accurate ventilation rate prediction in naturally ventilated cattle barns and proposes an optimised sensor deployment strategy applicable to standard barn configurations. The CFD-based ventilation assessment framework established herein provides a robust technical foundation for future studies on ammonia emission factor re-evaluation, smart ventilation control algorithm development, environmental monitoring system design, and ventilation performance assessment across different barn scales.
