Purpose: This study was conducted to compare factors related to suicidal ideation in single-person households with those in multi-person
households, thereby identifying the characteristics and risk factors of single-person households, thereby providing an empirical basis for mental
health management and serving as basic data for the development of public health policies.
Target and Method: Using raw data from the 8th (2019, 2021) and 9th (2023) National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey of the Korea
Disease Control and Prevention Agency, we targeted 2,489 adults aged 19 years or older who answered that they were single-person
households, excluding those with errors or missing survey questions, and compared them with 13,995 multi-person households for analysis. The
dependent variable, suicidal ideation, was categorized as a yes or no response to a questionnaire asking whether respondents had seriously considered suicide in the past year. The demographic, health behavior, and mental health status of the subjects were analyzed in frequency and
percentage, and the chi-square test was used to confirm the difference in suicidal ideation according to the characteristics of these factors. Logistic
regression analysis was performed to identify factors related to suicidal ideation in single-person and multi-person households.
Results: The rate of suicidal ideation among adults living in single-person households was 6.7%, and the rate of suicidal ideation among adults living
in multi-person households was 4.0%. Variables that commonly influenced suicidal thoughts among adults in single-person and multi-person
households were current smoking, activity restrictions, stress, anddepression. When a single-person household was a current smoker, the
association was 1.82 times (95% CI = 1.14-2.90) higher for suicidal ideation, and when there were activity restrictions, the association was
1.95 times (95% CI = 1.09-3.46) higher than when there were no restrictions, and when there was stress, the association was 3.23 times (95% CI = 1.94-5.38) higher for suicidal ideation compared to when there was no stress, and when there was depression, the association was 9.14
times (95% CI = 5.69-14.68) higher than when there was no depression. The variables that significantly affected suicidal ideation among adults in
multi-person households were income level, education level, economic activity status, and subjective health perception. Conclusion: Factors influencing suicidal ideation among the increasing number of single-person households have been identified as smoking, activity
restrictions, stress, and depression. Therefore, it is necessary to actively consider developing mental health policies and interventions that reflect the
characteristics of the growing number of single-person households.
