This study aims to confirm that the veneration of historical figures by the
Joseon sajok(士族) was achieved through the combination of Confucian
ideology and practical necessity. Furthermore, it seeks to clarify the context
in which the Neo-Confucian order of the late Joseon period was able to
establish itself socially, culturally, and institutionally.
Bak Paeng-nyeon was one of the Sayuksin(死六臣) executed by King Sejo
(世祖) for leading a plot to restore the abdicated King Danjong(端宗). While
the Sayuksin had been venerated as symbols of loyalty since the 15th
century, the degree of individual recognition varied. In particular, Bak
Paeng-nyeon was venerated more actively than others because he was the
only member of the Sayuksin whose direct descendants survived. The
primary agents involved in the 17th-century veneration of Bak Paeng-nyeon
were his direct descendants(the Suncheon Bak clan of Daegu and Seongju),
his collateral descendants(the Suncheon Bak clan of Hoe-deok), and Song
Si-yeol, a leading Sallim(士林) of the time.
The Suncheon Bak clan of Daegu and Seongju settled in Daegu after Bak
Paeng-nyeon’s execution and lived without significant social activity.
However, after the Japanese invasions of Korea, they established their
status as local sajok by entering government service and being registered
as Seonmu Wonjong Gongsin(宣武原從功臣). Yet, as their survival narrative
became known, a misunderstanding arose that they were originally of slave
status. In response, led by Bak Jong-u and Bak Sung-go, they compiled the
『Byeongjarok(丙子錄)』 and 『Yuksen-saeng Yugo(六先生遺稿)』 and
restored the Tombs of the Six Ministers(六臣墓) in Noryang. Through these
efforts, they venerated Bak Paeng-nyeon while simultaneously organizing
their family genealogy. Consequently, they solidified their identity as the
sole direct descendants of the Sayuksin and maintained their status as local
elites.
The Suncheon Bak clan of Hoe-deok had consistently existed as local
sajok until the 17th century, largely unaffected by Bak Paeng-nyeon's
punishment. Later, the brothers Bak Se-jin, Bak Se-hwi, and Bak Se-jing
participated in the veneration of Bak Paeng-nyeon by constructing the tomb
of their common ancestor, Bak Won-sang, alongside the Daegu and Seongju
branch. Examination of primary sources reveals that Bak Paeng-nyeon did
not originally reside in Hoe-deok. However, after Song Jun-gil uncovered a
narrative of Bak’s residence in Hoe-deok in 1657 (the 8th year of King
Hyojong), the Bak brothers requested Song Si-yeol to erect a monument
and pavilion to designate the historical site and performed ancestral rites
for Bak Paeng-nyeon. Through this process, the Hoe-deok Suncheon Bak
clan secured a certain status within their lineage, region, and academic sect,
while expanding their social networks.
Through his involvement in the veneration efforts by the Suncheon Bak
clans, Song Si-yeol recognized a connection between himself and Bak
Paeng-nyeon. From 1680 onwards, Song endeavored to establish a shrine
for Bak. His objective was not merely to commemorate the loyalty of the
Sayuksin, but to justify the political and academic positions of Song
Sang-min. This illustrates that practical elements, alongside ideological ones,
played a crucial role in the veneration of figures by the Joseon sajok.
Following Song Si-yeol’s death, individuals such as Song Yu, Song Gap-jo,
Song Sang-min, Kim Gyeong-yeo, and Song Guk-taek—all of whom were
blood relatives of the Eunjin Song clan and Hoe-deok elites—were
enshrined alongside Bak. As a result, Bak Paeng-nyeon’s shrine came to
function as munjung seowon(門中書院) for the Eunjin Song clan.
