(Abstract)
“The Dotan Seonsaengjip” is the collected writings of Dotan, Byeon Sajeong(邊士貞), (1529–1596), a Confucian scholar and righteous army commander of mid-Joseon. Much of his work was lost during the War of the Second Japanese Invasion, but in 1666, his great-grandson Byeon Yu compiled manuscripts that had been transcribed by disciples and gathered from other anthologies, and the collection was later published by his descendants in 1768. Nevertheless, a significant portion still remains lost.
Byeon Sajeong chose withdraw from officialdom at the young age of 26 to immerse himself in study in the Jirisan. Despite this seclusion, he spoke out passionately against official corruption and the dangers of factional politics, demonstrating the virtues of a practical Confucian scholar. When war broke out, at 64, he diligently rallied and led volunteer soldiers as a righteous army commander(義兵將). However, compared to his activities, research and evaluation of Byeon Sajeong and his works remain limited to this day.
The first chapter of this work examines the life, relationships, and activities of Byeon Sajeong in connection with his writings, aiming to highlight his character and the value of "Dotan Seonsaengjip." It also analyzes in detail the political context and the role of intellectuals at the time. The second chapter provides annotated translations of the first volume and supplementary writings, including 63 works such as his biography. Through various poems, travel records, memorials, and proclamations, readers can gain deeper insight into Byeon Sajeong's loyal patriotism, as well as the important role that provincial intellectuals played during the national crisis of the Japanese invasions.
