Tourism development can generate positive outcomes such as local economic revitalization and job creation, yet it may also entail social and environmental costs, including degradation of natural landscapes, changes to residents’ living environments, and declining social acceptance. Marine tourism, in particular, requires careful management because coastal and marine ecosystems are often ecologically fragile and spatially constrained. Demand is also highly seasonal and sensitive to weather conditions, which makes the quality of resource management and visitor convenience especially important. Boryeong City, located on Korea’s west coast, is widely recognized for its coastal attractions, including major beaches, tidal flats, island resources, and port areas that support both livelihoods and tourism activities. As tourism demand
evolves and regional development strategies diversify, the value of marine tourism resources in Boryeong has drawn renewed attention. However, in practice, development and management approaches are sometimes applied in a uniform manner despite the fact that different marine resources provide distinct experiences and require different governance and operational strategies. Additionally, conflicts and inefficiencies can arise when differences in perceptions among stakeholder groups are insufficiently reflected. Against this backdrop, there is a strong need to move beyond a simple “presence/absence” understanding of resources and to systematically verify how specific characteristics of different marine tourism resources translate into visitor experiences, satisfaction, place-related attachment, and ultimately support for development. This study classifies Boryeong’s marine tourism resources into five types—inhabited islands, uninhabited islands, beaches, tidal flats, and ports/harbors—and identifies five representative experiential attributes—cultural environment, natural environment, convenience, experiential/participatory factors, and commerciality—as the core features through which these resource types are perceived. The primary purpose is to empirically examine how these attributes influence tourist satisfaction, place attachment, and support for development. Importantly, rather than limiting the analysis to a binary comparison between local residents and outside tourists, this study incorporates out-migrants (people whose hometown is Boryeong but who currently reside elsewhere) as a third stakeholder group.
By doing so, the study aims to identify whether the same marine tourism resource attributes operate differently across residents, out-migrants, and tourists, and to provide strategic implications for enhancing social acceptance and sustainability in marine tourism development. In other words, the study integrates a resource-centered classification with an experience-centered attribute framework to address a more precise research question: not only “which resources matter,” but “which attributes shape which outcomes, through what mechanisms, and for which stakeholder groups.”
The conceptual foundation of this study is built on the premise that perceived value and experiential quality derived from tourism resources form satisfaction, and that satisfaction can contribute to stronger emotional bonds with a place and to supportive attitudes toward tourism development. Tourist satisfaction is understood as an overall evaluation resulting from a comparison between expected and actual experiences, serving both as an outcome of destination evaluation and as a mediator linking experiences to subsequent attitudes and behaviors. Place attachment extends beyond familiarity or general favorability; it refers to an accumulated emotional bond and meaning-making process connected to the place. While tourists may form attachment through repeated and meaningful experiences, residents and out-migrants may possess stronger or more enduring attachment rooted in personal memories, identity, and lived experiences. Support for development is treated not merely as an abstract stance of approval or disapproval, but
as a broader notion that can include acceptance of policies and projects and willingness to cooperate with development initiatives. Support for development is particularly important because it affects conflict management and policy feasibility at the local level. Based on these perspectives, this study examines direct effects of resource attributes on satisfaction, attachment, and support, as well as indirect pathways in which satisfaction mediates the influence of attributes on attachment and support. A group comparison perspective is incorporated to reflect the assumption that identical attributes may carry different meanings to different stakeholder groups.
The classification of Boryeong’s marine tourism resources was developed by considering both spatial characteristics and typical usage patterns. Inhabited islands are islands with resident communities and living infrastructure; they often provide experiences centered on village landscapes, everyday culture, and community-based interactions. Uninhabited islands tend to have stronger naturalness and ecological value, making scenic and environmental qualities particularly salient. Beaches typically accommodate large volumes of visitors and are relatively accessible, so the quality of facilities, safety management, information provision, and overall convenience can strongly shape satisfaction. Tidal flats are resources where ecological value and education/experience-based tourism intersect; thus, program quality, interpretation, safety, and environmental management are critical.
Ports/harbors function as livelihood spaces as well as tourism gateways, where food, commercial activity, and visitor flows converge, potentially producing a combined experience of commerciality, convenience, and everyday local culture.
By proposing this typology, the study expands the understanding of marine tourism beyond a beach-centric frame and offers a more comprehensive approach that includes islands, tidal flats, and port spaces as integral components of Boryeong’s marine tourism system.
For the empirical analysis, a survey was conducted targeting Boryeong residents and non-residents (out-migrants and tourists) who had visited Boryeong within the past three years. Data collection combined online survey administration and distribution through field-based and network channels. After excluding insufficient or careless responses, a total of 483 valid questionnaires were used for analysis. Survey items measured perceptions of marine tourism resource attributes (cultural environment, natural environment, convenience, experiential/participatory factors, and commerciality), tourist satisfaction, place attachment, and support for development using Likert-type scales, along with demographic variables and visit-experience items. Analyses were performed with SPSS. Reliability and validity tests were conducted first, followed by factor analysis to confirm measurement structure. Correlation analysis was used to examine the directions of relationships and to assess potential multicollinearity issues. Multiple regression analyses then tested the effects of resource attributes on satisfaction, attachment, and support for development. Hierarchical regression was used to evaluate mediation effects of satisfaction. Finally, group comparisons were performed to examine whether the influence mechanisms differed across residents, out-migrants, and tourists.
The findings can be summarized as follows. First, regarding the relationship between resource attributes and tourist satisfaction, the cultural environment of inhabited islands, the convenience of beaches, and the commerciality of ports/harbors showed significant positive associations with satisfaction. This suggests that Boryeong’s marine tourism experience is shaped not only by what visitors see and do, but also by how smoothly and conveniently they can use the destination and how richly local commercial and everyday-life experiences (food, markets, street environments, and activity nodes) are integrated into the tourism journey. The influence of inhabited-island cultural environment indicates that island tourism is not merely scenic consumption; rather, the lived culture, atmosphere, and community-based identity of inhabited islands can function as a meaningful driver of satisfaction. The effect of beach convenience highlights that in high-volume beach destinations, operational factors such as facilities, circulation design, safety management, and information services play a decisive role in shaping overall satisfaction. The effect of port/harbor commerciality implies that satisfaction may increase when marine tourism flows connect with local consumption opportunities and stay-type activities.
Second, in the relationship between resource attributes and place attachment, the cultural environment of inhabited islands and the convenience of beaches showed significant positive relationships with place attachment. Although attachment is difficult to form through a single short visit, these results imply that positive and meaningful experiences can strengthen emotional ties and meaning-making related to Boryeong.
The inhabited-island cultural environment may help visitors recognize the “Boryeong identity” of the place, encouraging emotional bonding through perceptions of everyday culture and local authenticity. The relationship between beach convenience and attachment suggests that operational quality can extend beyond immediate satisfaction and contribute to a broader positive orientation toward the destination, especially when repeat visits are feasible.
Third, in the relationship between resource attributes and support for development, the natural environment of uninhabited islands and the convenience of beaches displayed significant positive associations with support, whereas the cultural environment of inhabited islands showed a significant negative association with support for development. The positive relationship for uninhabited-island natural environment suggests that when the resource is perceived as well-preserved and of high ecological/scenic value, stakeholders may be more receptive to forms of “managed development” that emphasize conservation and environmentally responsible use. The effect of beach convenience implies that when daily convenience, safety, and service infrastructure are improved, support for further enhancement and development may expand. The negative relationship between inhabited-island cultural environment and development support is particularly important. This does not necessarily imply opposition to any form of development, but rather suggests that those who highly value the cultural environment of inhabited islands may demand stronger conservation-oriented principles and may be more cautious about development approaches that could threaten local identity, landscape, or community life. In this sense, the finding calls for development designs that prioritize cultural and landscape conservation, respect residents’ quality of life, and align with community-based operational principles.
Fourth, mediation analyses revealed that satisfaction plays an important mediating role in linking resource attributes to place attachment. In particular, the effects of inhabited-island cultural environment and beach convenience on attachment were strengthened through satisfaction, indicating that attributes influence attachment largely by producing positive experiences and evaluations. Additionally, the relationship between beach convenience and development support appeared to involve both direct effects and indirect effects through satisfaction, implying a partial mediation structure. For the relationship between inhabited-island cultural environment and development support, the results suggest the possibility of competing pathways: cultural environment may increase satisfaction (and thus indirectly increase support), while simultaneously strengthening conservation preferences that reduce direct support for development if development is perceived as threatening cultural value. This implies that in inhabited islands, increasing satisfaction alone does not guarantee stronger development support; the appropriateness of development models—scale, location, landscape protection, cultural preservation, and participation mechanisms—must be addressed simultaneously.
Fifth, place attachment showed a significant positive association with support for development, suggesting that support is not determined solely by expectations of economic benefits or facility expansion but is also shaped by emotional bonding, identity connection, and the desire to see one’s place improve in a meaningful and acceptable way.
This is especially relevant for residents and out-migrants, who may have deeper attachment bases, but tourists may also develop attachment through repeated visits and meaningful experiences. Therefore, policy communication and participation strategies should not rely only on rational explanations of feasibility and efficiency; they should also share local values and identity narratives and enable stakeholders to recognize development outcomes as jointly created and collectively beneficial.
From a group comparison perspective, this study emphasizes that the mechanisms through which resource attributes shape satisfaction, attachment, and support are not necessarily uniform across residents, out-migrants, and tourists. Residents experience tourism development as a direct change in their living environment and may evaluate it through a lens that balances perceived benefits and costs. Out-migrants may approach local change through a combination of emotional attachment, memory-based identity, and both development expectations and conservation demands. Tourists may respond more directly to experiential quality and convenience, and higher satisfaction can translate not only into revisit and recommendation intentions but also into agreement that improvements are needed. These differences indicate that the same project may require different persuasion points and communication strategies. For example, in beach contexts, improvements in safety, circulation, facility quality, and operational convenience are may be central.
Likely to gain broad support. In inhabited islands, however, conservation principles, harmony with residents’ quality of life, small-scale and dispersed operation models, and community-based governance are more likely to serve as foundations for social acceptance. In uninhabited islands, the trustworthiness of conservation and management systems
For tidal flats and ports/harbors, where ecological value, experiences, commercial activity, and everyday-life spaces intersect, integrated design that balances environmental management, program quality, local-business coexistence, and visitor safety is likely to be essential.
The academic contributions of this study are threefold. First, it proposes a comprehensive typology of Boryeong’s marine tourism system that extends beyond beaches to include islands, tidal flats, and port spaces. Second, it operationalizes resource typology through an experience-centered attribute framework (cultural environment, natural environment, convenience, experiential factors, and commerciality) and applies this structure to empirical analysis. Third, it integrates satisfaction and place attachment into a mechanism explaining development support, thereby clarifying how resource perceptions translate into socially consequential outcomes. In practical terms, the results suggest that development and management priorities should differ by resource type. Beach areas may benefit most from convenience and operational quality improvements that increase satisfaction and broaden support. Inhabited islands require conservation-centered, balance-oriented strategies that protect cultural and landscape values while establishing governance and participation models that maintain ensure experiences are meaningful and sustainable.
Community integrity. Uninhabited islands call for conservation-based, managed-use approaches. Ports/harbors require integrated planning for tourism flows, commercial functions, and safety management. Tidal flats require sophisticated program design and environmental safeguards to
Finally, this study has limitations and suggests directions for future research. Because the analysis is based on cross-sectional survey data at a single point in time, it cannot directly capture temporal changes in perceptions before and after specific policy or facility interventions. Additionally, because online and network-based distribution was included in the sampling process, some degree of sample composition bias may be unavoidable. Future research could employ longitudinal or repeated-measure designs to examine changes over time, and could integrate behavioral data such as length of stay, mobility patterns, and expenditure information to model the satisfaction–attachment–support formation process more precisely. It would also be useful to conceptualize development support as multidimensional—distinguishing policy support from behavioral support (e.g., willingness to participate or cooperate)—to improve practical applicability. Moreover, given potential within-city variation across coastal zones, island zones, and urban-adjacent areas, future studies could incorporate spatial-unit analyses to explore interactions between resource type and local context.
