This study experimentally investigated the flow boiling heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics under subcooled inlet conditions using a 150 mm long mini-channel heat sink. In particular, the study focused on comparing the case where subcooled flow boiling occurred throughout the entire channel with the case where it transitioned to saturated flow boiling. FC-72 was used as the working fluid, and the channel had a hydraulic diameter of 2.4 mm. Under subcooled outlet conditions, nucleate boiling dominated along the entire channel, and gravitational effects caused the flow to separate into two distinct regions: an elongated bubble region in the upper part of the channel and a liquid flow region in the lower part, similar to the behavior observed in macro-channels. In contrast, under saturated outlet conditions, a transition from subcooled to saturated flow boiling occurred inside the channel, and a wavy annular flow developed in the downstream region. Although convective boiling was observed in the downstream portion, nucleate boiling remained the dominant heat transfer mechanism over the entire channel. In the two-phase flow region, the pressure drop increased due to enhanced two-phase frictional and accelerational pressure gradients, and higher mass velocity resulted in significantly larger pressure drops near critical heat flux (CHF). Under saturated outlet conditions, flow instability developed and was classified into Type C and Type D depending on the occurrence of dryout incipience. Fast Fourier transform (FFT) analysis showed that, as flow instability intensified, the pressure fluctuation transitioned from a high frequency stable two-phase flow (Type B) to low frequency unstable two-phase flow (Type C and D). Finally, existing correlations for predicting local heat transfer coefficients during flow boiling were evaluated against the present data, providing new insight into heat transfer behavior under mixed subcooled and saturated boiling conditions.
