This study analyzes the impact of religious involvement on subjective well-being and examines how this effect is moderated by the national-level cultural value system of individualism―collectivism. Utilizing data from the European Social Survey (ESS) Round 7, a multilevel analysis was conducted on responses from over 38,000 individuals across 21 countries. Religious involvement was measured by distinguishing between the external/social dimension (religious attendance) and the internal/psychological dimension (subjective religiosity), while subjective well-being was operationalized as happiness and life satisfaction.
At the individual level, subjective religiosity demonstrated a consistent positive effect on both happiness and life satisfaction. Conversely, religious attendance had a significant positive effect only on life satisfaction, with no statistically significant association found for happiness. This suggests that regular religious attendance may be more closely linked to life satisfaction―a cognitive evaluation of life as a whole―than to happiness, which tends to be a more transient, emotional experience.
At the national level, a cross-level interaction analysis revealed that collectivism significantly moderated the impact of both dimensions of religious participation. In countries with stronger collectivistic values, the positive influence of religious attendance on life satisfaction was amplified, and subjective religiosity also showed a more pronounced effect on both happiness and life satisfaction. These results imply that the social bonding, normative conformity, and identity-forming functions of internalized faith serve as more potent psychosocial resources in collectivistic cultural contexts.
In summary, this study empirically demonstrates that the two dimensions of religious involvement function differently regarding subjective well-being, and their efficacy is contingent upon cultural value systems. These findings support the “cultural fit” hypothesis, suggesting that the role of religion as a psychosocial resource is context-dependent, thereby expanding the explanatory power of research on subjective well-being.
