The escalating demand for reliable and high-power-density propulsion systems in Urban Air Mobility (UAM) applications has led to increased interest in the Dual Three-Phase (DTP) Dual Rotor Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (DR-PMSM). This topology is primarily selected for its inherent fault-tolerance and redundancy. However, DTP systems, particularly when employing Fractional-Slot Concentrated Windings (FSCW) and driven by Voltage Source Inverters (VSIs) via Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) control, face a critical challenge: the generation of significant high-frequency circulating harmonic currents. These currents are a direct consequence of the mutual magnetic coupling between the two winding sets and lead to increased vibration, loss, and performance degradation.
This thesis establishes a comprehensive methodology to formally analyze and mitigate these circulating harmonic currents. First, a rigorous mathematical model of the DTP-PMSM is developed, utilizing Vector Space Decomposition (VSD) theory to decouple the system into fundamental ab and harmonic xy subspaces. The Frozen Permeability Method (FPM) is then introduced and validated as a necessary tool to accurately extract the self and mutual inductance components under non-linear magnetic conditions.
The analysis confirms that the mutual leakage inductance actively reduces the inductance barrier in the harmonic subspace, facilitating large circulating currents. A crucial design finding is the existence of a trade-off relationship between the spatial harmonic components and the temporal harmonic components.
Based on this, a novel design optimization methodology is presented and validated via co-simulation. The proposed method targets the minimization of the mutual leakage flux by optimizing stator parameters, such as the slot shoe tip geometry. The results demonstrate that the optimal design minimizes the mutual leakage inductance, successfully suppressing the circulating harmonic currents during PWM operation while maintaining high efficiency and acceptable loss limits for UAM propulsion.
