This study aims to elucidate the concrete practices and political intentions underlying the royal evaluation(eogo, 御考) that were actively conducted during the reign of King Jeongjo, based on Taehakeunbaesijip(太學恩杯詩集). The discussion is structured into three main parts.
Chapter 2 examines the compilation process and significance of Taehakeunbaesijip, which systematically records King Jeongjo’s royal evaluation. Chongseo(總敍), accounting for approximately 20 percent of the entire volume, reveals two key points. First, Jeongjo’s examination policies consciously inherited precedents from previous royal reigns. By emphasizing himself as the legitimate successor of the former kings, Jeongjo sought both to reenact their achievements and to preempt potential criticism or objections. Second, the preface provides a comprehensive account of the compilation of various Binheungrok(賓興錄), collections that record the ranked lists and examination papers of successful candidates. This indicates that the compilation intent of Taehakeunbaesijip closely aligns with that of the Binheungrok tradition.
Chapter 3 investigates the origins and institutionalization of royal evaluation. While royal evaluation was practiced with unprecedented frequency during Jeongjo’s reign, records of such practices are scarce both before and after his rule, underscoring its exceptional character. Jeongjo repeatedly emphasized that royal grading executed by his own hand was fundamentally different from evaluations conducted by examination officials and carried special significance. In practice, recipients of royal evaluation were often granted preferential treatment. Moreover, Jeongjo employed royal evaluation not merely as a means of assessing examination papers but as a mechanism to exercise royal authority and reinforce monarchical power. This suggests that royal evaluation functioned less as a neutral and rational assessment than as a politically charged act imbued with the character of royal favor.
Chapter 4 analyzes Jeongjo’s literary orientation as reflected in his royal comments(eobi, 御批) and erasures(eomal, 御抹). By examining passages singled out as exemplary in the Taehakeunbaesijip alongside extant examination papers, this chapter demonstrates that Jeongjo prioritized accurate comprehension of the examination topic and the overall completeness of the paper. Candidates were expected to grasp both the textual origins of the topic and Jeongjo’s underlying intent, skillfully incorporating classical precedents. Beyond literary craftsmanship, political and ideological considerations also played a role, as Jeongjo favorably evaluated passages that praised his reign and affirmed royal legitimacy.
For these reasons, it is difficult to interpret Jeongjo’s sustained practice of royal evaluation primarily as an effort at stylistic correction. First, Munche banjeong(文體反正) was most active around 1792, after which Jeongjo’s explicit references to literary style sharply declined, whereas royal evaluation of examination papers continued until the late years of his reign. Second, passages negatively evaluated by Jeongjo were not necessarily written in sopumche(小品體) or in violation of Neo-Confucian orthodoxy. Given the rigid formal constraints of examination genres, it would have been structurally difficult to develop diverse lines of thought within such limited frameworks.
The objectives of this study can be summarized in two respects. First, it seeks to correct inaccuracies in previous scholarship on Taehakeunbaesijip and to reassess its literary and historiographical value. Second, it examines the political intentions underlying Jeongjo’s practice of personally grading examination papers from the early years of his reign. As a distinctive phenomenon of the Jeongjo period, royal evaluation warrants conceptualization as a form of “politics of royal evaluation,” reflecting the intersection of literary judgment and monarchical power.
