This study aims to propose practical design strategies for applying the creepage and clearance distance requirements defined in Clause 8.9 of IEC 60601-1 (Edition 3.2), a core electrical safety standard for portable and wearable medical devices. Although rapid technological advancements have enabled medical devices to become increasingly compact and personalized, the IEC 60601-1 standard—which all electrical medical devices must comply with—has not evolved at the same pace. As a result, meeting the Clause 8.9 creepage and clearance requirements within the limited enclosure space of small-form-factor devices has become a significant design challenge.
To address this issue, the present study first analyzes the IEC 60601-1 Clause 8.9 requirements and then examines six commercially available Holter ECG monitors approved and marketed in Korea and abroad. Using publicly available technical documents and visual inspection, the study investigates how these devices implement creepage and clearance design measures. Based on these findings, this work proposes feasible creepage and clearance design strategies tailored for compact, low-voltage medical devices.
Furthermore, the study highlights that the current IEC 60601-1 does not adequately reflect the technological characteristics of modern low-voltage wearable devices. It suggests the need for standard improvements, including the establishment of a dedicated creepage/clearance classification for low-voltage circuits and more flexible insulation design pathways.
This research provides practical evidence to support the proactive incorporation of electrical safety requirements during the design phase of portable and wearable medical devices and is expected to contribute to future standard revisions and the development of design guidelines for emerging device categories.
