Moment-resisting frame systems are structural systems in which beams and columns are rigidly connected, allowing the entire frame to resist lateral loads. In moment-resisting frames, the structural component that integrates beams and columns is referred to as the beam–column joint. The joint plays a critical role in transferring forces between members, and its failure may lead to column failure or even collapse of the entire structure. Therefore, the performance of beam–column joints is directly related to the overall seismic performance of a structure.
Including Korean Design Standard KDS 14 20 80 [Seismic Design Standard for Concrete Structures] and American Concrete Institute design code ACI 318-19, design provisions for beam–column joints are provided in various national design codes. Although these codes differ slightly, they commonly consider the confinement condition of the joint, the concrete compressive strength, and the effective joint area into the joint shear strength equations. The effective joint area refers to the horizontal cross-sectional area of the joint, which is considered appropriate since the joint shear strength is assumed to resist horizontal shear forces. However, the horizontal shear force acting on the joint is transferred through diagonal compression struts formed within the joint core, which is influenced by the beam depth and the joint aspect ratio. However current design provisions do not explicitly account for the actual force transfer mechanism of beam–column joints, and it is necessary to investigate the variation in joint performance with respect to joint aspect ratio.
In addition, the influence of the joint shear strength ratio should also be examined. The joint shear strength ratio represents the relative strength of the joint compared to the maximum demand and has a significant effect on the joint failure mode. Previous studies investigating the effect of joint aspect ratio have tended to overlook the influence of the joint shear strength ratio. Therefore, it is necessary to clarify whether the degradation in joint shear performance associated with increasing aspect ratio is affected by the joint shear strength ratio.
To address this issue, a total of six specimens were fabricated and tested in this study, including specimens designed to induce BJ-type failure, in which joint failure occurs after beam flexural yielding, and B-type failure, in which beam failure occurs after beam flexural yielding. The experimental results showed that specimens designed to induce B-type failure exhibited strengths exceeding the predicted values despite an increase in joint aspect ratio, whereas specimens designed to induce BJ-type failure exhibited a reduction in joint shear strength. However, it was also observed that specimens in the B-type failure group gradually exhibited characteristics of BJ-type failure as the joint aspect ratio increased.
To ensure the reliability of the experimental results and to conduct further analysis, nonlinear analyses were performed using the OpenSees program. The analytical results confirmed that joints with sufficiently high joint shear strength ratios can suppress strength degradation associated with increasing aspect ratio. In addition, it was shown that the joint shear strength equation in the current Korean design code overestimates joint shear strength as the joint aspect ratio increases.
Finally, based on the experimental results and data collected from previous studies, a joint shear strength equation incorporating the effect of joint aspect ratio was proposed. The proposed equation was found to provide a more reasonable prediction of joint shear strength compared to the current design provisions.
