The purpose of this study is to analyze the effects of unrealistic design elements in brand spaces on users’ experiential perceptions within the ZEPETO metaverse platform. By comparing these spaces with physical brand pop-up stores of the same brand, this study aims to identify differences in experiential structures between the two environments. This study is motivated by the observation that prior research has tended to focus on either metaverse experiences or physical space experiences in isolation, resulting in a lack of empirical studies that directly compare the two environments within the same context.
The study adopts Schmitt’s(1999) Strategic Experiential Modules(SEMs) as its theoretical framework and operationalizes five components—Sense(with two subcategories), Feel, Think, Act, and Relate—as dimensions for analyzing user perception. Data were collected using a paired-samples survey design in which identical statements were presented separately for the ZEPETO space and the physical space. Based on a total of 230 responses, descriptive statistics were calculated, and differences between the two environments were tested using paired-samples t-tests. Gender differences were examined using independent-samples t-tests, and interaction effects between generation and gender were analyzed using a two-way ANOVA. In addition, paired-samples t-tests were conducted for the restructured three-dimensional higher-order factors.
The results indicate that the ZEPETO space elicited significantly higher responses than the physical space in Sense–Structure and Act. In contrast, Sense–Impression and Feel were rated significantly higher in the physical space. No significant differences between the two environments were found for Think and Relate. Generational and gender differences were not prominent across most experiential factors, and the interaction effect of generation × gender was also not statistically significant at the 0.05 level.
Overall, the metaverse space demonstrates strengths in action-oriented experiences supported by explicit structures, exaggerated visual stimuli, and immediate interaction, whereas physical spaces show advantages in emotional immersion and long-term memory formation through multisensory stimuli. These findings suggest that the two environments are not in a competitive relationship but rather coexist as spaces that provide complementary experiential values. The results can serve as foundational evidence for future brand space design and the development of digital communication strategies.
