Fictional realism is the ontological view that accepts the existence of fictional entities such as Sherlock Holmes, Hogwarts, and Wakanda. This position holds a significant theoretical advantage in that it can explain utterances of the sentences like “Sherlock Holmes is a fictional character” in the most straightforward manner. However, fictional realism faces a formidable challenge in accounting for utterances of sentences that directly deny the existence of fictional entities yet appear to be true, such as “Sherlock Holmes does not exist.”This difficulty, widely known as “the problem of negative existentials,” has long been regarded as the Achilles' heel of fictional realism.
The objective of this dissertation is to critically examine the major responses proposed by fictional realists to address the problem of negative existentials. This study categorizes and analyzes these responses into three main frameworks: contextualism, relativism, and pragmatic invariantism.
First, contextualism treats “exist” as a context-sensitive expression, attempting to show that the truth of an utterance such as “Sherlock Holmes does not exist” in a specific context is compatible with the truth of fictional realism. Second, relativism regards “exists” as an expression sensitive to the domain of the point of evaluation. By doing so, it aims to demonstrate that the fact that an utterance such as “Sherlock Holmes does not exist” is evaluated as true relative to a specific domain of evaluation does not entail the falsity of fictional realism. Finally, pragmatic invariantism acknowledges that while the literal content of the utterance “Sherlock Holmes does not exist” is false in every context, it can convey a true pragmatic implicature in certain contexts, thereby accounting for our linguistic intuitions.
This dissertation provides a detailed analysis of these three positions and argues that none of them offers a satisfactory solution to the problem of negative existentials due to their respective inherent flaws. Ultimately, this critical investigation provides a powerful theoretical motivation to look beyond fictional realism and seriously explore alternative theoretical frameworks.
