This study investigates the structural effects of the multi-label system on firm competitiveness in the Korean entertainment industry. Amid the expansion of global fan platforms and the increasing importance of intellectual property (IP)-based business models, entertainment firms face a structural tension between creative exploration and operational efficiency. In this context, the multi-label system has emerged not merely as an organizational expansion strategy but as a distinctive organizational design that combines decentralized creative units with centralized operational infrastructure. This study conceptualizes the multi-label system from a structural perspective and empirically examines its economic validity and underlying mechanisms. Drawing on organizational structure theory, ambidexterity theory, and transaction cost economics, this study adopts an explanatory sequential mixed-methods design (QUAN → qual). In the quantitative phase, partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) is applied to balanced panel data from 50 publicly listed Korean content firms over a five-year period (2020–2024) to test the macro-level causal relationships between organizational decentralization, operational efficiency, IP portfolio diversity, and firm performance. In the qualitative phase, in-depth interviews with seven industry experts are conducted to interpret the micro-level organizational mechanisms underlying statistically ambiguous or counterintuitive quantitative findings. The empirical results yield three key findings. First, organizational decentralization does not have a statistically significant negative effect on operational efficiency. This result indicates the presence of a structural offsetting mechanism in which the micro-level costs associated with decentralized creative units—such as coordination and redundancy costs—are counterbalanced by economies of scale generated through centralized shared service centers and platform infrastructures. Second, decentralization has a strong positive effect on IP portfolio diversity, suggesting that the delegation of budget authority and profit-and-loss responsibility to individual labels substantively enhances exploratory innovation and creative experimentation. Third, while increased IP portfolio diversity negatively affects short-term accounting performance (ROA), it positively influences firm market value (Tobin’s Q). This divergence suggests that the costs associated with IP diversification reflect inevitable investment lags in the process of intangible asset accumulation rather than strategic failure. In this study, competitiveness is defined not merely by short-term financial performance but as a multidimensional concept combining long-term market value assessed by capital markets and the organization's capacity for IP accumulation.
Overall, this study demonstrates that the multi-label system in the Korean entertainment industry operates through a dual governance structure that integrates radical decentralization in creative domains with advanced centralization in infrastructural domains. This dual governance framework functions as a structural mechanism for reconciling efficiency–innovation tensions in IP-based organizations. By articulating this mechanism, the study contributes to organizational theory in creative industries and provides strategic implications for designing multi-label systems in accordance with firms’ growth stages and asset accumulation levels.
