This study quantitatively analyzes the narrative content of ESG reports from general trading companies in Korea and Japan and compares cross-country differences in disclosure strategies. As ESG reporting increasingly requires verifiable and structured disclosure, the study examines narrative characteristics of ESG strategies together with alignment with GRI.
The data consist of the latest English-language ESG reports of selected companies in both countries. Reports that did not meet the English-report requirement were excluded, and the final sample includes 12 reports, six from Korea and six from Japan. To improve cross-country comparability, texts were standardized through preprocessing, and word frequencies were normalized to reduce bias from differences in report length and structure.
The analysis follows a consistent procedure. TF–IDF was used to identify salient keywords by country. Co-occurrence analysis of co-occurring words was applied to examine association patterns among terms. LDA topic modeling with visualization was used to identify latent themes and their structural relationships. The derived topics and keywords were then mapped to the GRI code system to organize and compare the structure and completeness of disclosure. Consistency and reproducibility checks were also conducted to support the reliability of interpretation.
The results indicate that both countries repeatedly address core issues such as climate and energy, occupational health and safety, human rights and supply chains, ethics and compliance, and boards and risk management. However, the emphasis differs. Korean reports highlight implementation-oriented narratives, including greenhouse gas and energy reduction, safety management, training and capacity building, and community engagement. Japanese reports place stronger emphasis on governance and management-system narratives, including boards, internal control, risk management, and circular economy and resource circulation. Co-occurrence patterns similarly show recurring pairings shared by both countries, while resource-circulation pairings are more prominent in Japan and capacity-building and safety-management pairings are more evident in Korea. Topic structures also differ, with Korea more centered on implementation narratives in environmental and social areas and Japan more clearly organized around governance and managerial procedures.
The GRI-based mapping comparison suggests that disclosure is relatively stronger in environmental and governance areas in both countries, while the social area tends to be comparatively weaker. Japan shows particularly systematic narratives in governance and environmental areas. Korea provides relatively rich implementation content in environmental and social areas, but stronger linkages among indicators and management systems remain necessary. Overall, disclosure quality is not improved simply by expanding topics. It improves when targets, indicators, accountability, and procedures are connected through a coherent reporting logic. Based on these findings, Korean companies should better integrate implementation strengths into strategic and governance-oriented narratives, while Japanese companies should strengthen balance by improving quantitative indicators and performance disclosure in the social area.
This study contributes by comparing ESG disclosure strategies within the same industry group using text-mining methods and linking the results to the GRI code system. It also interprets cross-country differences using the resource-based view and institutional theory. Limitations include the restriction to English-language reports, the scope of text-based analysis, and boundary cases in the mapping process.
