This study investigates the pragmatic characteristics and error patterns of complaint speech acts produced by learners of Korean for Academic Purposes (KAP) in academic email contexts and empirically examines the effectiveness of an instructional model that integrates genre-based writing pedagogy with ChatGPT-based pragmatic feedback. In academic settings, email writing functions as a primary medium of formal interaction between professors and students; however, systematic pedagogical research on complaint emails—particularly those involving power asymmetry, social distance, and face-threatening acts—remains limited.
To address this gap, the present study designed authentic complaint email writing tasks reflecting real university situations, such as grade disputes and dissatisfaction with assessment outcomes. Data were collected from 30 advanced KAP learners at the undergraduate and graduate levels through pre- and post-writing tasks. Learners’ emails were analyzed using a rubric grounded in established pragmatic and discourse frameworks, including complaint speech act stages (Trosborg), politeness strategies (Brown & Levinson), pragmatic appropriateness (Thomas), and academic email discourse structure (Swales).
The pre-task analysis revealed that learners frequently employed highly direct complaint strategies even in formal academic contexts, including declarative complaints, imperative requests, and blame-oriented statements. In addition, recurrent issues were observed in the omission of contextual framing, insufficient use of mitigating expressions, and inconsistent honorific usage, indicating limited internalization of academic email genre conventions and sociopragmatic norms governing professor–student communication.
Based on these findings, a ChatGPT-based pragmatic feedback intervention was implemented. ChatGPT was configured to provide analytical feedback on learners’ emails by identifying complaint stages, discourse moves, politeness strategies, and pragmatic appropriateness, while offering alternative expressions and metapragmatic explanations rather than prescriptive corrections. Learners engaged in iterative revision cycles informed by this feedback. Post-task analyses demonstrated notable improvements in learners’ awareness of complaint speech act sequencing, more appropriate selection of politeness strategies, and enhanced pragmatic realization within the academic email genre.
The findings suggest that AI-assisted pragmatic feedback can effectively mediate higher-level pragmatic development beyond grammatical accuracy, supporting learners’ genre awareness and sociopragmatic decision-making in academic writing. This study contributes empirical evidence to the growing body of research on AI-mediated pragmatics instruction and proposes a pedagogically viable model for integrating large language models into Korean for Academic Purposes education.
