The purpose of this study is to gain an in-depth understanding of the employment experiences of adult visual artists with developmental disabilities by exploring how they form and sustain their professional lives after entering the labor market through artistic activities. To this end, ten young adults with developmental disabilities and their ten guardians were selected as paired participants, and data were collected through dyadic in-depth interviews with each artist and their guardian. The collected data were transcribed and analyzed using NVivo qualitative data analysis software. Following a case study methodology, both within-case analysis and cross-case analysis were conducted.
Through cross-case analysis, key categories and subcategories explaining the employment experiences of young artists with developmental disabilities were derived. In this process, economic activity conceptualized as a broader analytical category than employment experience was used as the reference point and divided into three phases: the pre-entry phase of economic activity, the transition phase, and the maintenance and expansion phase. This stepwise analytical framework enabled an understanding of employment experiences not as isolated events, but as a dynamic process of change and accumulation over time. The findings indicate that, prior to entering economic activities, these artists had already formed their roles as artists through family support, institutional environments, and the accumulation of social opportunities. Although their roles expanded after being employed as wage workers in companies, tensions emerged between their artistic autonomy as artists and the role expectations imposed on them as workers. Accordingly, their employment experiences can be understood as a process shaped through the simultaneous experience of artistic practice and wage labor.
In this context, this study discusses the broader meaning of the employment experiences of young artists with developmental disabilities. While previous studies have primarily approached the artistic activities of people with developmental disabilities from therapeutic or educational perspectives, this study highlights them as active agents participating in economic activities based on their professional identities as artists. The findings reveal that, as employment opportunities for artists with developmental disabilities have expanded, social structures facilitating their employment have gradually taken shape. Notably, the use of artist employment as a means of substituting for or alleviating employers’ obligations related to disability employment quotas was particularly prominent. Specifically, quantified working conditions were presented, such as working four hours per day via telecommuting and submitting one artwork (size 10) per quarter. These conditions functioned as a structural arrangement that emphasized their role as “labor performers” who mechanically produce artworks, without sufficiently considering their artistic rights and autonomy. Nevertheless, the artists perceived themselves not merely as workers but as artists and demonstrated a strong commitment to maintaining their identities as creative subjects.
Furthermore, while it was found that artistic activities and employment could be sustained through the active intervention and support of guardians, the study also revealed a structural limitation in that this support-dependent arrangement is difficult to sustain after the death of a guardian. In light of these findings, this study emphasizes the need to reconceptualize young artists with developmental disabilities not as objects of protection or temporary employment, but as continuous occupational subjects. By presenting theoretical, practical, and policy implications, this study contributes to a life-course-based understanding of job continuity and life trajectories grounded in the employment experiences of young artists with developmental disabilities.
