This study aims to analyze how knowledge of Sino-Korean words influences the Korean reading processes of intermediate Chinese-speaking learners of Korean and, based on this analysis, to propose reading strategies that make use of such lexical knowledge. It begins from the observation that Chinese vocabulary is closely related to Korean Sino-Korean words in terms of pronunciation, form, and meaning, yet empirical research remains insufficient regarding how Chinese-speaking learners actually process Sino-Korean words that appear in Korean texts during real-time reading. To address this gap, the study employed eye-tracking technology to measure learners’ reading processes in real time and combined these data with comprehension tests and interview results to provide a comprehensive account of the characteristics of Sino-Korean word processing and patterns of reading strategy use.
The research procedure consisted of two rounds of reading tests, a lesson on Sino-Korean-based reading strategies, and post-instruction interviews conducted after a second set of reading tests. Analysis of the eye-tracking data revealed that learners showed longer fixation durations and more regressions in native-Korean word segments, indicating a higher processing load in those parts of the text. In contrast, they were able to infer meaning in Sino-Korean segments relatively quickly by drawing on pronunciation cues and pre-existing knowledge of Chinese characters, which resulted in faster processing. The interview findings further showed that, when encountering Sino-Korean words, learners reported using “similarity in pronunciation to Chinese” and “the meanings of morphemes” as key cues for inferring word meanings.
In the second round of tests conducted after the Sino-Korean strategy instruction, several eye-tracking indices, including total reading time, fixation time, and mean gaze duration, showed positive changes. These results suggest that learners came to identify Sino-Korean words more rapidly and to employ more efficient reading strategies during text comprehension. In addition, by presenting Sino-Korean-centered reading strategies such as morpheme-based analysis, pronunciation-based meaning inference, and extracting key information through Sino-Korean words, the study proposes concrete pedagogical directions for Korean reading instruction tailored to Chinese-speaking learners.
The significance of this study lies in its experimental identification of the characteristics of Sino-Korean word processing among Chinese-speaking learners and its integrated analysis of diverse reading strategy use patterns through the combination of eye-tracking data and interview data.
