Amidst the escalating national challenges of population imbalance and regional extinction, existing studies on migration have shown limitations by neglecting spatial interdependence. Residential choice is inherently an interaction with both the destination and its surrounding environments. This study aims to decompose the determinants of migration into direct and indirect (spatial spillover) effects, analyzing how these influences vary by migration type (intra-regional vs. inter-regional) and macro-region (Metropolitan vs. Non-metropolitan).
Using 2023 data at the Eup-Myeon-Dong level, this research employed the SDM(Spatial Durbin Model) to achieve its objectives. The key findings are as follows: First, the indirect effects of neighboring regions were found to be significantly larger than the direct effects, empirically proving that surrounding environments are more critical in migration decisions than individual regional traits. Second, for long-distance inter-regional migration, physical environmental factors such as education and housing amenities exerted a greater influence than economic factors, revealing a "reversal phenomenon" that challenges traditional economic-driven migration theories. Third, while physical environment was the primary driver in the Metropolitan area, economic opportunities remained the core catalyst for migration in Non-metropolitan areas.
These results suggest that migration theories should expand beyond income maximization toward a Quality of Life perspective. Policy-wise, the study emphasizes the necessity of transitioning from fragmented administrative approaches to integrated regional governance and tailored population policies that reflect specific regional contexts.
