In plant projects, cables are principal bulk materials in the instrumentation and control (I&C) field, constituting a significant proportion of both quantity and cost. Traditionally, cable quantity estimation during the bidding stage has relied on manual methods using 2D drawings and Excel spreadsheets, which frequently lead to calculation errors and inefficiencies due to repetitive manual efforts. To address these issues, this study proposes a BIM (Building Information Modeling) based automation system that enables automatic cable routing and material quantity take-off (QTO) with refined input data and essential modeling.
To implement the automation process, the elements required for estimating cables and related materials were first classified into input-based and calculation-based factors. High-volume data with low change frequency are managed via Excel input, while parameters frequently adjusted by designers are implemented through a user interface(UI).
The automated system was implemented using the Visual Studio Integrated Development Environment based on the Autodesk Revit API. Its core functions consist of automatic cable path-finding and automated QTO for cables and related materials. Cable routing within the BIM model is implemented in two sections: Section 1 (Junction Box to Cable Tray) and Section 2 (Inside Cable Tray). For cable path calculation within Section 2, the A algorithm*, incorporating a heuristic function to optimize search efficiency, is applied to find and visualize the shortest path for design verification.
The user interface is built on WPF (Windows Presentation Foundation) and includes various features such as Excel upload, data export, route configuration, and integration with an AI agent. Users input cable data according to a predefined Excel format, specify conditions through the UI, and execute calculations to automatically obtain quantities for cables, junction boxes, and cable trays. Significantly, the system is architected to integrate with an LLM-based AI agent, allowing for semantic reasoning and responses based on user conditions entered in natural language. This enables the system to function as an interactive design assistant that supports engineering decision-making, rather than a simple calculation tool.
The study results indicate that this system enables designers to minimize repetitive manual work and achieve accurate, rapid QTO within the BIM environment, while efficiently comparing and reviewing optimization outcomes across various scenarios. Future research will focus on automating input data preprocessing and expanding the application to other disciplines’ quantities, thereby continuously improving the system’s versatility, reliability, and accuracy.
