This dissertation investigates how sales agents’ physical proximity and sales agent type jointly shape consumer responses in offline apparel stores, focusing on the mediating role of psychological reactance and the moderating role of regulatory focus. As retailers increasingly introduce service robots alongside human salespeople, understanding when an agent’s approach behavior is perceived as “helpful support” versus “intrusive interference” has become a critical managerial issue. Drawing on proxemics theory, psychological reactance theory, and regulatory focus theory, this study develops and empirically tests a research model in which sales agents’ approach behavior and type influence consumer reactions through psychological reactance, with individual differences in regulatory focus further shaping these effects.
Two experimental studies were conducted with adult consumers in China using scenario-based, image-based stimuli set in a casual apparel store context. Study 1 employed a 2 (Proximity behavior: Approaching vs. Non-approaching) × 3 (Sales agent type: Human agent, Humanoid robot, Non-humanoid robot) between-subjects design (N = 360). Participants were randomly assigned to one of six conditions and evaluated their psychological reactance, attitudes toward the sales agent, purchase intention, and revisit intention. Study 2 replicated the 2 × 3 design with another sample of 360 consumers and additionally measured regulatory focus. A regulatory focus index(RFI) was computed from promotion and prevention focus scores and analyzed both as a continuous moderator and as a categorical factor (Promotion-dominant vs. Prevention-dominant), using multivariate GLM and PROCESS Model 8.
Across both studies, the interaction between proximity behavior and agent type significantly affected consumer responses via psychological reactance. When a human salesperson or humanoid robot approached the customer, psychological reactance increased and, in turn, reduced attitudes toward the agent, purchase intention, and revisit intention. In contrast, the non-humanoid robot’s approach behavior did not significantly heighten reactance, and its effects were driven mainly by direct evaluations of functional reliability and interaction utility. Mediated moderation analyses showed that psychological reactance significantly mediated the effect of proximity × agent type on consumer responses for humanoid robots and human salespeople, whereas this indirect effect was absent for non-humanoid robots. The moderating role of regulatory focus was only partially supported: although a three-way interaction with agent type was not robust, promotion-focused consumers exhibited lower reactance and more favorable responses to approach behavior than prevention-focused consumers.
The findings extend the literature on retail proxemics and service robots by identifying psychological reactance as a key cognitive mechanism linking sales agents’ proximity behavior to downstream consumer outcomes and by showing that this mechanism operates differently across agent types and self-regulatory orientations. Managerially, the results suggest that retailers should design proximity and interaction protocols in a differentiated manner for human salespeople, humanoid robots, and non-humanoid robots, and should carefully manage approach behavior, signaling, and customer autonomy in order to prevent unnecessary reactance and foster positive in-store experiences.
