This study examines how the distribution of opinions in online news comments influences individuals’ commenting behavior and investigates the mediating roles of fear of isolation and argument success expectancy. Drawing on the spiral of silence theory, five research questions were formulated to explore the effects of majority comment–personal opinion congruence, situational fear of isolation, and debate success expectancy on opinion expression in online environments.
To test these questions, an online experiment was conducted with undergraduate students at a university in Seoul (N = 93). The experiment consisted of a pretest and a main test. In the pretest, participants’ prior attitudes toward the expansion of smoke-free zones on campus were measured. In the main experiment, an online discussion forum designed to resemble an actual news comment section was implemented, and participants were exposed to comment sets representing either a pro-majority or anti-majority condition. After viewing the comments, participants could choose to post a comment or refrain from doing so. Subsequently, key mediating variables—fear of isolation and argument success expectancy—were measured.
The results showed that congruence between the majority opinion and the participant’s personal opinion(congruency) had a significant negative effect on fear of isolation, which in turn had a significant negative effect on commenting behavior. Congruence also had a significant positive effect on debate success expectancy. Debate success expectancy positively predicted commenting behavior and negatively predicted fear of isolation. While the direct effect of congruence on commenting behavior was not significant, the indirect effects through the two mediators were significant, indicating a fully mediated pathway.
This study provides empirical evidence for how the spiral of silence mechanism operates in online environments. This study contributes to the literature by introducing situational fear of isolation, thereby addressing limitations of prior research that focused primarily on dispositional fear of isolation. In addition, it advances existing work by examining actual commenting behavior rather than behavioral intentions. The use of realistic comment-based stimuli further enhances ecological validity, offering theoretical and practical implications for understanding psychological processes underlying online opinion expression.
