This study investigates the evolution and emerging patterns of high school students’ communication competency within a history–hip-hop integrated arts education program. While national curricula emphasize communication competency as a multifaceted capacity, there remains a need for further discussion on analytical frameworks capable of examining its qualitative development within classroom contexts. To address this, the study suggests a “Communication Competency Development Model” by integrating Gunawardena et al.’s (1997) Interaction Analysis Model (IAM) with Bakhtin’s (1981, 1986) dialogism. This model incorporates the dialogic dimensions of utterances—such as other-directedness, responsiveness, and polyphony—into the structural progression of interaction, thereby categorizing communicative enactment into three stages: Unidirectional Expression, Dialogic Adjustment, and Communal Meaning Sharing.
Methodologically, the research employed McNiff and Whitehead’s (2011) Action–Reflection Cycle, conducting three iterative cycles of action research. The study involved 45 participants at a private boarding high school in Gyeonggi Province over a four-month period. Data were gathered through participant observations, creative artifacts, interviews, and video recordings, with thematic and discourse analyses used to identify key interactional shifts.
The primary findings are as follows. First, across the cycles, students’ communication was observed to shift from monologic information sharing (IAM Phase 1) toward meaning negotiation and collaborative co-construction (IAM Phases 2–3). In the final cycle, student-led consensus and metacognitive reflection appeared, indicating a move toward the stage of Communal Meaning Sharing. Second, the integration of historical and hip-hop discourses appeared to activate heteroglossia, facilitating the recontextualization of historical texts into students’ present-day lifeworld language. Third, the iterative redesign of the curriculum was associated with a shift in the teacher’s role from instructor to facilitator and supporter, while “peak experiences” like intensive camps and performances contributed to students’ self-perceived transformation.
These results provide the following insights. First, the study suggests the potential of history–hip-hop integrated arts education as a pedagogical site for expanding dialogic communication. Second, the three-stage framework indicates its possibility as a diagnostic tool for assessing the qualitative depth of classroom interactions. Third, this evidence-based approach offers a potential pathway for translating abstract curriculum competencies into observable learning processes.
