This study aims to elucidate the concrete features and literary significance of the works of Eodang Lee Sang-su(峿堂 李象秀, 1820-1882) by collecting and analyzing his extant writings and offering a comprehensive overview of his literary world. Lee Sang-su was a literary figure active in the mid-nineteenth century who devoted himself to lecturing and literary composition despite the decline of his family and persistent economic hardship. Although he never entered official service and remained an independent intellectual outside the bureaucracy, he was widely regarded as a sanrim(山林, reclusive scholar) due to his outstanding erudition and literary reputation. Through close associations with prominent contemporaries such as Yun Jeong-hyeon(尹定鉉), Bak Gyu-su(朴珪壽), Kim Jeong-hui(金正喜), Gang Wi(姜瑋), and Lee Geon-chang(李建昌), he further refined his literary competence and produced a substantial body of works grounded in profound reflection on scholarship and reality. His writings were highly esteemed by both contemporaries and later generations, attracting attention not only within Joseon but also among literary figures in China and Japan.
Despite this recognition, previous scholarship on Lee Sang-su has largely been confined to individual prose works or limited genres. In particular, his extensive poetic corpus—amounting to approximately 1,500 poems—has remained virtually unexplored, leaving his literary world insufficiently examined in an integrated manner. This gap in research can be attributed to several factors, including the concentration of Joseon late-period studies on a small number of canonical figures, the constraints imposed by Lee Sang-su’s life as a rural recluse, and the scattered transmission of his writings.
To address these limitations, this study comprehensively organizes Lee Sang-su’s works as transmitted in diverse forms, including the collected writings Eodang-jip(峿堂集), manuscripts, poetry anthologies, poetic critiques, and epistolary materials. It also reconstructs his life history and examines his network of associations in order to deepen understanding of the author. As interpretive foundations for his works, the study investigates his views of prose grounded in the principle of entering the Way through literature (因文入道) and his poetic theory emphasizing making poetry through learning (以學爲詩). Works shaped by these literary principles were highly valued in the contemporary literary field, and Lee gained particular renown for his poetic talent, being ranked alongside Gang Wi(姜瑋) and Lee Hwang-jung(李黃中) as one of the representative poets of the Gojong era(高宗代).
Lee Sang-su’s literature is examined through his poetry and prose. Three major characteristics stand out in his poetry. First, the realities of poverty experienced by a janban(殘班, declining yangban) elite are vividly rendered through tones of hardship and self-mockery arising from destitution and itinerant life. Second, his poems embody the ethical stance of the literati, marked by scholarly introspection and steadfast moral integrity. Third, through pure communion with nature, his poetry develops Buddhist and Daoist modes of thought, deepening philosophical reflection on the self.
His prose writings are analyzed around three central themes. First, as a nineteenth-century intellectual, Lee articulated a positive view of wealth(富) and emphasized estate management(治産), revealing an active concern for statecraft(經世) grounded in the urgency of the times(時義). Second, in writings addressed to his children, he presented practical content on family education, offering concrete directions and methods for child education from the perspective of an educator. Third, his travel writings display distinctive modes of representing famous scenic sites through the expansion of mental imagery, while also expressing critical awareness of the abuses prevalent in contemporary travel culture.
Lee Sang-su’s literary works intersect scholarly aspiration, the lived reality of an impoverished literatus, and the critical consciousness of a socially engaged intellectual. His poetry and prose capture the inner world of nineteenth-century intellectuals and the realities of the time through restrained language, demonstrating a distinctive synthesis of scholarship and literature that upheld Confucian intellectual identity within the literary circles of the period.
This study is significant in that it restores the literary achievements of Lee Sang-su, a figure relatively marginalized in contemporary literary history, and illuminates the diversity of late Joseon literature. Furthermore, it provides an opportunity to move beyond a narrowly canon-centered understanding of nineteenth-century Classical Chinese literature and contributes to future reconstructions of literary history during the transitional period toward modernity.
