This study analyzes the limitations of conventional Anti-Money Laundering (AML) systems, which heavily rely on rule-based detection and are therefore vulnerable to novel laundering techniques and prone to high false positive rates. To address these shortcomings, we propose an extension of Graph Neural Network (GNN)-based detection models. Specifically, we introduce an Edge-Weighted Graph Attention Network (Edge-GAT) that inherits the structural advantages of the Fraud Graph Transformer (FraudGT) while incorporating temporal edge features such as transaction hour, weekday, and inter-transaction time difference. By shifting beyond node-centric approaches, the proposed model is designed to detect multi-stage and cyclic money laundering patterns with greater precision.
The research process included a review of the definition and stages of money laundering, the limitations of existing AML systems, and the relevant regulatory background. We further examined the development of GNNs and the distinctive features of FraudGT. Using the IBM AML Synthetic Dataset, we designed and trained the Edge-GAT model, applying extended edge attributes and hyperparameter optimization to assess its performance. Comparative experiments with GAT, GCN, and FraudGT were conducted, evaluating Precision, Recall, and F1-score metrics. Results show that Edge-GAT achieved an approximately 11 percentage-point improvement in F1-score over baseline GAT and outperformed FraudGT as well. The inclusion of temporal edge features yielded the most significant performance gains, while additional techniques such as masking and modified loss functions showed only limited benefits. Moreover, the study confirms that Edge-GAT demonstrates superior efficiency in high-depth transaction detection and real-time applicability compared with existing models.
Money laundering is a major threat to the global financial system and national security, necessitating advanced detection technologies. The primary contribution of this study lies in overcoming the limitations of node-centric AML detection and presenting a time-aware, edge-centric framework capable of capturing complex and covert laundering patterns. Future research directions include exploring hybrid GNN–Transformer architectures, self-supervised learning, and the application of the proposed methodology to real-world financial data to further enhance generalizability and practical deployment.
