This study examined age-related differences in the composition of infant objecct play at 12, 18, and 24 months and analyzed how infant object play and maternal contingent responses are temporally connected and organized from a micro-analytic perspective.
Participants were 90 infants and their mothers from the Korean sample of the Global BABIES project. Fifteen-minute naturalistic home videos were analyzed. Infant object play episodes were defined as continuous object manipulation and categorized as exploratory, functional, symbolic, or mixed play. For each infant, proportions of episodes at each play level were calculated. Maternal contingent responses were defined as semantically related maternal responses occurring within 3 seconds from onset or offset of an infant’s object play episode and were categorized into unimodal language input, unimodal manual action, multimodal responses, and no response. Unimodal language input was subdivided into referential language, regulatory language, and no language input, whereas unimodal manual action was subdivided into touch, gesture, and no manual action. The frequency of each subcategory was recorded. Data were analyzed using MANOVA, sequential behavioral analysis, and one-way ANOVA according to the research questions.
Results showed that as age increased, infants engaged in object play episodes less frequently but with longer durations. Exploratory and functional play predominated at 12 and 18 months, whereas mixed play incorporating symbolic elements became more prominent at 24 months. Sequential behavioral analysis showed that maternal unimodal language, particularly referential language, occurred more often at episode onset, whereas regulatory language, unimodal manual action, and multimodal responses were more likely to occur at episode offset. No significant age differences were found in maternal contingent response types. Further analyses showed that unimodal language at episode offset was associated with subsequent declines in infant play level, whereas no response was associated with maintenance of play level; no consistent sequential patterns followed unimodal manual action or multimodal responses.
In conclusion, this study demonstrates that infant object play and maternal contingent responses are organized within temporally structured interactional sequences. By considering both response type and response timing, the findings highlight the importance of understanding infant-mother interaction in terms of behavioral sequence, transition, and contextual timing.
