Seong Wu-hyang(1933~2014) was a Living National Treasure for Chunhyangga and is considered the foremost myeongchang(master singer) among the Boseong-sori(보성소리) lineage. She trained the largest number of students in the Pansori(Korean narrative opera) community from the late 20th to the early 21st century. While she was a Living National Treasure for Chunhyangga, she also learned, enjoyed performing, and widely taught Simcheongga with equal importance. However, her Simcheongga has been less studied in academia compared to her Chunhyangga. Therefore, the author focused on researching her Simcheongga by unearthing rare materials.
The complete manuscript of the Simcheongga that Seong Wu-hyang used for her Pansori studies while learning under Jeong Eung-min in the 1950s was donated to and is currently housed in the author’s Korean Classical Music Record Museum. This manuscript is complete, without missing pages. This performance manuscript(changbon, 창본), which has never been studied in academia, was first compared and analyzed with her Simcheongga recordings from the late 1950s, early 1960s, and 1977.
This analysis revealed that Seong Wu-hyang's Simcheongga, which profoundly influenced contemporary Pansori by training numerous successors, underwent some changes over time. Comparing Seong Wu-hyang's complete Simcheongga study manuscript(mid-1950s) and the 1977 recording shows 14 differences in the rhythmic cycle. The study manuscript(mid-1950s) contains two passages that are absent in the 1977 recording. The 1977 recording contains eight passages that are absent in the study manuscript(mid-1950s), indicating clear differences. Based on these findings, the complete study manuscript of Seong Wu-hyang's Simcheongga(mid-1950s) is viewed as her learning version. The late 1950s recording is considered the faithful learning version. The early 1960s recording is considered the version influenced by Park Cho-wol, and the 1977 recording is regarded as the Seong Wu-hyang established version.
Furthermore, a comparison of the original text of Jeong Eung-min’s Simcheongga manuscript(1935) and Seong Wu-hyang’s complete Simcheongga study manuscript, with revised, and added sections revealed the origins and the process of how Seong Wu-hyang internalized her Simcheongga.(The two complete manuscripts show major differences in 47 places.) The study also compared her Simcheongga with those of master singers who studied alongside her under Jeong Eung-min, identifying both differences and commonalities. While the lyrics of Jeong Eung-min’s Simcheongga manuscript(1935) and Seong Wu-hyang’s complete Simcheongga study manuscript(mid-1950s) differ in many parts, the recordings of Seong Wu-hyang, Jeong Gwon-jin, Jo Sang-hyeon, and Seong Chang-sun show considerable similarity in lyrics. The study compared 17 major differences in the narrative among the recordings of Seong Wu-hyang, Jeong Gwon-jin, Jo Sang-hyeon, and Seong Chang-sun. Additionally, her intense focus on Simcheongga training is linked to her life story, and her unique and prominent Pansori characteristics, including the unique vocal structure(called a-guseong), are discussed.
The complete Simcheongga study manuscript of Seong Wu-hyang(mid-1950s, total 24,658 characters) and the associated recordings are valuable resources for Korean and East Asian Studies. The paper offers a perspective considering East Asian viewpoints and Oriental philosophy regarding Pansori Simcheongga, one of East Asia's representative performing arts. The study identified 43 instances of scholarly errors, ambiguities, or formerly untranslatable words, sentences, and content contexts in the existing textual verification of Simcheongga lyrics. It proposed new interpretations and provided annotations to the original text of Seong Wu-hyang’s complete Simcheongga study manuscript.
In conclusion, the research demonstrates that Jeong Eung-min’s Boseong-sori Simcheongga was not transmitted virtually unchanged from its originator, Park Yu-jeon, as commonly believed. Instead, it was significantly revised and supplemented by Jeong Eung-min and further partially changed, resulting in separate transmissions by Seong Wu-hyang, Jeong Gwon-jin, Jo Sang-hyeon, and Seong Chang-sun. Furthermore, this study revealed that the content of pansori is characterized by continuous change, which should be taken into consideration when designating it as a modern national intangible cultural heritage.
