The recent decline in life satisfaction among young adults has emerged as a pressing national and structural concern, extending beyond individual-level issues. Notably, the quality of life for Korean youth consistently ranks among the lowest across OECD member countries, highlighting the urgent need for social interventions aimed at enhancing youth well-being. In response, the Seoul Metropolitan Government has pioneered a comprehensive youth space policy, including the establishment of Youth Hubs and Youth Centers, implemented at a metropolitan scale. These Seoul Youth Centers function not merely as physical spaces, but as regional hubs offering integrated services—such as personalized counseling and community support—to facilitate young adults' social participation and engagement.
Despite the growing policy interest, empirical evidence regarding the actual impact of these centers on youth life satisfaction remains limited. In particular, few studies have systematically examined the qualitative dimensions and effectiveness of service quality from the perspective of users. Addressing this gap, the present study empirically investigates the effect of service quality at Seoul Youth Centers on young adults' life satisfaction, with a focus on the mediating role of Community Attachment. The findings aim to provide both theoretical and practical insights for evaluating the functions of Youth Centers and guiding the development of future youth space policies.
Data were collected via a structured self-report questionnaire from 165 young adults with prior experience using Seoul Youth Centers. Analyses were conducted using SPSS 29.0, including descriptive statistics, reliability analysis, correlation analysis, hierarchical regression, and Sobel’s test to assess the relationships and mediating effects among the variables.
Results indicate that perceived service quality at Seoul Youth Centers has a statistically significant positive effect on young adults' life satisfaction. This finding supports the Bottom-up Spillover Theory, suggesting that positive service experiences contribute meaningfully to overall psychological well-being. Furthermore, Community Attachment was found to significantly mediate the relationship between service quality and life satisfaction, demonstrating that high-quality service strengthens young adults’ emotional connection and sense of belonging to their communities, which in turn enhances overall life satisfaction. Sub-dimension analyses revealed that Tangibility was the only factor exhibiting a significant direct effect on life satisfaction, in addition to its indirect effect through Community Attachment.
In conclusion, this study empirically demonstrates that experiences of service quality at Seoul Youth Centers contribute to enhancing young adults’ life satisfaction, mediated by Community Attachment. These findings underscore the role of Youth Centers as vital community hubs that extend beyond service provision, fostering regional belonging and improving youth quality of life. The study provides essential evidence to inform the strategic design and implementation of youth policies.
