This study analyzes the language generation mechanism of the generative artificial intelligence ChatGPT through Martin Heidegger’s concept of Verfallenheit(fallenness)—specifically Gerede(idle talk), Neugier(curiosity), and Zweideutigkeit(ambiguity)—in order to examine how interactions with AI repetitively reproduce and render visible the inauthentic structure of human linguistic existence within a technological setting. With the advancement of natural language processing, large language models (LLMs) increasingly simulate human-like linguistic responses, giving rise to experiential conditions in which users perceive AI not merely as a computational tool but as a relational counterpart, or even a quasi-other. This experience of anthropomorphization, however, does not result from AI acquiring understanding or consciousness. Rather, it emerges because the inauthentic modalities intrinsic to human language are performatively reenacted through technological mediation. Heidegger characterizes everydayness as a condition that simultaneously opens the possibilities of authenticity and inauthenticity, within which human existence is realized in fluctuating modes. Inauthenticity, in particular, manifests through the interconnected structures of idle talk, curiosity, and ambiguity. This study argues that ChatGPT’s language generation process technically produces patterns of averaging, circulation, and deferral that correspond to these structures of fallenness, thereby constructing relational scenes in which understanding and meaning exchange appear to occur. Methodologically, the research adopts a conceptual and hermeneutic approach grounded in logical coherence, collecting and categorizing actual ChatGPT responses and systematically mapping them onto Heidegger’s three analytical categories. In addition, theories of performativity and speech acts are employed to elucidate the conditions under which users experience AI-generated language as evidence of competence or understanding, despite the absence of such capacities. Through this analysis, the study moves beyond evaluative debates concerning whether generative AI genuinely imitates human cognition or understanding. Instead, it demonstrates that linguistic interaction with AI functions as a technological simulation of inauthentic modes of human existence. ChatGPT operates not merely as an informational tool, but as a “relational existential simulator” that amplifies the averaging, immediacy, and surface-level character of human language. In engaging with AI, users are led to reflexively re-encounter the structural conditions of their own linguistic existence. This research contributes a novel ontological framework for understanding language-based human–AI relations in the era of generative artificial intelligence.
