This study aims to enhance the heat transfer performance of jet array impingement by installing micro pin fins. The effects of jet hole spacing (P), distance from jet hole outlet to impingement surface (H), jet hole diameter (D), jet velocity (V), and inlet subcooling temperature (ΔTsub) on the jet array impingement with micro pin fins were experimentally investigated. A total of 21 test cases were conducted, consisting of one smooth surface and twenty micro pin–finned surfaces. The parameters were varied as P = 4.8 and 7.2 mm, H = 3.0 and 6.0 mm, D = 0.8 and 1.2 mm, and ΔTsub = 10 and 30℃. Flow conditions were compared using experiments performed at a fixed jet velocity of V = 2 m/s and at a fixed flow rate of Q = 0.95 LPM. HFE-7100 was used as the working fluid, and the system pressure was set to 117.5 kPa, corresponding to a saturation temperature of 65℃.
The experimental results were presented in boiling curves and heat transfer coefficient curves, and the onset of nucleate boiling (ONB), onset of nucleate boiling degradation (ONBD), and critical heat flux (CHF) were compared for each case. Flow visualization was also conducted to analyze jet behavior, bubble generation, and bubble distribution, and to identify the influence of each parameter. Compared to the smooth surface, the pin–finned surface provided 2.5 times increase in heat transfer area and 2.44 times enhancement in CHF.
When the jet hole spacing was narrow, the jet could not sufficiently disperse within the channel, and the downstream jets were hindered from properly impinging on the heated surface, resulting in reduced CHF. Increasing the distance from the jet hole outlet to the impingement surface provided more space for bubble dispersion; however, the reduced flow rate inside the channel inhibited the effective discharge of bubbles, resulting in a decrease in heat transfer enhancement. A larger jet hole diameter increased the flow rate at the same jet velocity, and because the jet covered the micro pin fins, the CHF was enhanced. When the jet velocity increased, the fluid exited before reaching the boiling point, delaying ONB, but bubble removal became more effective, leading to higher CHF. Increasing inlet subcooling promoted condensation effect, reduced flow resistance against the jet, and consequently increased CHF.
From the 21 test cases, a total of 309 data points were obtained, among which 222 data points in the two-phase regime were used to develop a predictive correlation for the average Nusselt number in a jet array impingement boiling with micro pin fins. This developed correlation showed an MAE of 12.6% and an MRE of 4.2%.
