In this study, a reactive surfactant (IBS) derived from inedible biomass, specifically 10-undecenoic acid, was synthesized and applied to the emulsion polymerization of acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs). Conventional PSAs stabilized with non-reactive surfactants often suffer from limited water resistance and reduced interfacial adhesion due to surfactant migration toward the film surface during or after film formation. IBS contains a polymerizable functional group that enables covalent incorporation into the polymer chains, which is expected to suppress such migration and improve the overall stability of the adhesive film.
X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed that the surface accumulation of surfactant, clearly observed in sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)-based PSA films, was significantly reduced in the IBS-based system. This result indicates that the reactive surfactant is effectively immobilized within the polymer matrix. The use of IBS also improved the water resistance of the films, as evidenced by reduced water uptake and increased static and dynamic contact angles. These changes are attributed to enhanced interfacial stability and to microstructural reinforcement originating from ionic interactions within the polymer network.
Mechanical and adhesive performance tests further demonstrated the benefits of employing IBS. The IBS-based PSA exhibited higher cohesive strength than the SDS-based control, and peel tests conducted on porcine skin substrates showed a transition from interfacial failure to cohesive failure with increasing IBS content. Under wet conditions, including saline immersion, the IBS-based PSA maintained a higher fraction of its initial peel strength, indicating improved durability in humid or aqueous environments.
Overall, the findings of this study suggest that biomass-derived reactive surfactants can effectively overcome the limitations associated with conventional non-reactive surfactants in emulsion polymerization. The results highlight the potential of IBS as a promising stabilizer for developing water-resistant and durable PSAs suitable for applications that demand enhanced interfacial performance.
